Hi, I was wondering if ivermectin was a pescription only medicine, if not where do you get it from and how much do you give per dose. I see some of you keep it in your first aid kit.

You do not need a prescription. Best to get xeno 450 topical ivermectin, this is the cheapest I have seen and delivery is free. Depends on weight of pig, but one of the capsules on back of neck and down spine, second 10 days later.

I dont treat routinely for mites but I do keep xeno 450 in my piggy kit so I have it if/when they need it.

It's not a prescription only thing but officially there is only one version of ivermectin licensed for use in small animals and that is Xeno 450 which is exceptionally expensive. Any other type of ivermectin you can buy online is marketed under the Small Animal Exemption scheme which means it has not been officially tested for safety etc in small animals.

If you're unsure about any aspect of it though I would recommend going to your vet and either having the pigs treated or seeing if they will treat the first time and give you enough to dose topically for the next couple of treatments that are required.

Hi, the reason I asked was because my guineas have gone through so much lately, one with uti, the other with ovarian cysts, then a stone in her urethra and an on going problem with a uti, due to the stone, I think they both have mites, both of them are nibbling their hair and breaking it off. I could take them back to the vet, I think I have my own parking space there now, I have been that much lately, but I wondered whether there was anything I could do, save keep stressing them out with constant trips to the vet that is a thirty mile round trip each time. thanks for you suggestions guys.

You will be safe with the xeno 450, each dose is measured and is in a capsule, so unless the pig is exceptionally big or very young, one capsule per dose is fine :)
