So my piggie Jørgen has had some issues with his teeth. When I first got him a few months ago he lost all his upper and lower front teeth (they broke off)
When this first happened i thought it was because he got very excited on feeding/ground time and he miscalculated his speed/end of the carpet/the wall and ran straight into it.
Both his teeth grew back out and he was functioning and eating by himself after 2 days ( I hand fed him fresh veggies in protion sized when he couldn't pick it up himself). Today however, I noticed that his right top tooth has been broken off again. Jørgen has the same diet as my other pig Knut (apart from that he eats alot more) so I don't think he would be lacking any nutrients as they have a varied diet and Knut has no dental problems.
Jørgen is gaining weight and growing at the same rate as Knut, so I don't think it's causing him any great problems.
Is this something that I should deal with - and in that case how? I live in a small town so we don't really have an excoti pet's vet - but he doesn't really seem to need one either. But I'm not sure, so your help would be much appreciated!
Thank you,
Benni

Hi sorry to hear about Jorgen's toofies :(
I had a piggie who did this often too, but his problem was a little complicated.
Look i'm sure one of our more experienced people can help you with some idea........ debbie (aka furryfriends) is a whizz with piggies with toofie problems!

HEALING LOVES FOR JORGEN XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Because you haven't done 50 posts yet (this allows you to personal message other people) i'll send Debbie a message so she can look at your post when she comes on Monday morning UK time :)

The main thing at the moment, is that he's growing well. If you aren't already, it would be a good idea to monitor his weight weekly so you can see how he's going.

One of mine came to me with no teeth, so it was a case of hand feeding, as you have been, little piggy bite sized bits of food!

If it happens again when they grow back, it might be a good idea to investigate why. In the meantime, see if you can work out what he's doing to be able to break his teeth. Mine snapped his by chewing on his bars repeatedly!

How old is Jorgen? How long have you had him, and where did he come from?

When my piggy, Toffee, had front teeth problems (overgrown) they were down to a problem with her molars. But she wasnt gaining weight and your Jørgen is so not sure if thats relevant or not but thought I would mention it in case it is.
I'm sure more help will be along soon

For now it seems that whilst this is inconvenient it isn't really causing any major problem. However, why this is happening needs to be considered. As Amanda has already mentioned, piggies can break teeth if they bite at the bars Do your piggies live together? Do they get on well? I have experienced broken teeth when there has been some conflict between piggies, especially boars who seem to clash jaws when they are in conflict.

For now, I would monitor weight carefully, keep an eye on the relationship between the piggies, if they live together and give a Vitamin C supplement, just in case it is being caused by a deficiency.

Thank you all so much for the advice!
I do have two boars living together - so I guess it could be that they've had little fights. They usually get along great and will cuddle/clean eachother, but sometimes they have a 2 second fight.
Jørgen I adopted after I found him at a party (!) running wild in an apartment, absolutely terrified and they fed him alcohol and other things. So obviously my little piggie heart cried for him and I came to pick him up the next day. I've had him for a couple of months now and he's gaining weight and is very happy and trustful - it's been really beautiful to see how this little piggie has transformed. So obviously I get so nervous when I think something is wrong with him
I'll see how his teeth are growing back now, and if there's any more problems I'll take him to my friends who are vets (they're for small animals but not specialiced in exotic pets - but i know they will refer me to another vet in another city if they can't help)
and again - thank you all so much for your help and support :)

It could be that he hasn't had a particularly good diet up until now, and that's caused him to have weak teeth. Or it could just be one of those things. Do you know roughly how old he is?

I think the weak teeth could very well be a result of the diet he was fed before he came to live with you. I would definitely give him a Vitamin C supplement. I know you're feeding him a good diet now, but it might help to give him even more of a boost.

Yup, they both get supplements sprinkled on their food but I'll make sure that Jørgen at least gets his share ov Vit C :)

I don't know how old - but i would guess around 6-8 months? he is about 500g (1 pound)

Thank you guys :) x>>

OMG what a terrible start to his little life! :...
I'm so glad you have Jorgen and that you're trying your best for him....... xx>>>

Sending some girlie kisses to help Jorgen ;) xoxoxoxoxoxo

I would agree with the others: he probably had a bad diet before you got him. No other problems with that from what you are saying, I wouldn't worry much, just watch him gaining weight :)

Our vet mentioned it can be genetic sometimes some teeth can be weaker than others. Because he keeps on breaking several teeth, I'd think it's his diet, after all.
