Jerry is two years of age,i noticed jerry was not eating much food or pooping much.also losing weight.i commmmenced force feeding critical care as also losing weight.today i have taken him to the vet, whom say he must have his back teeth filed due to overgrown back teeth.it was suggested this maybe an ongoing problem, and will need anasthetic each time.I'm sure i have read this can be done without sedation.i collect jerry from vets tomorrow. does.anyone have any knowledge of where i can get specialised help for filing teeth without anasthetic please.

The very best vet for dental work is Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton. People travel the length and breadth of the country for their piggy to get treatment from him. He gets such great results because he can file the teeth without the need for anaesthetic.

thanks furryfriendsdo you think they would mind taking a look at Jerrys teeth,if i refere him.thanks.i collect him from leicester in the morning.so i will hopefully have a full update on what was found.

thanks furryfriendsjerry had one over grown back tooth that was filed downbut he still has difficulty picking up hay, what would cause just one tooth to ovrgrow over tongue?iim definantly going to ring simon on monday, thanks for the support.

There are so many different reasons for teeth going wrong. Simon will be able to sort Jerry out though. He is amazing xx

Hi furryfriends,Jerry is still not eating despite him having back molar filed under anaesthetic.he had lost weight at the vet hospital.ive continued to syringe feed since he got home sat midday.I'm not prepared to take jerry back there.he seems bright otherwise.now his front teeth are elongated and not biting together. Is it still ok to continue syringe feeding.I feel the vets i got Jerry refered to would want to put him to sleep.it was suggested, but i feel i have to give him a chance.he is a lovely lad and I'm very fond of him.thanks .

Don't give up, Simon is a fantastic piggy vet & does conscious dentals, your boy really has the best chance with him. Syringe feed as often as your boy will take food if he is not eating anything else, every 4 hours is good. Weigh him daily at the same time x

If anyone can help it is Simon. As Poppy's Mum has said keep syringe feeding as often as you can until his appointment. Hopefully they will be able to squeeze you in as soon as possible.

thanks for the advise.I'm feeding him 3 to 4 hourly as tolerated.his weight is steadily going up,I'm weighting him twice aday.ive got some fine critical care after this critcal care oxbow is completed,I'm also giving pro c,and syringing water.his feaces are soft and squashed.may have to reduce fluid intake.i will ring simon in the morning .his wives are keeping him busy!he is still rumblestrutting!:)

I'm sure he will, jerry is running around today,we are maintaining his weight with the syringe feeding, but he hates it.he seems so frustrated that he cannot eat food.thanks so much furryfriends.i willl update you after the appointment.xx

hi,Jerry has seen simon, very thorough examination.his teeth are quite good,he has an abscess on his jaw, which has caused Jerry not to eat, teeth have grown long.so on metacam andazithromycin. orally.go back in two weeks such a different experience to the vets in leicester.still to syringe feed if he does not eat.thanks Furryfriends for the recommendation.drive was fairly easy,3/4 of an hour so no hardship.xx

So glad all went well. Hopefully the teeth will come good. once the abscess is sorted xx

Jerry is not eating for himself,is this typical with dental and abcess problemsi?I'm maintaining his syringe feeding 3 x aday,he seems fine on antibiotics.sleeping alotbut interacting with his wives!xx

I know my Fred didn't eat anything when he was on Zithromax. I had to syringe feed him for the full course as he was intolerant he was also very bloated.

Sometimes it can take a day or two to start eating after a dental.

Hope he gets better soon.

Thanks Flintstones.I'm excited Jerry took his first bite of alfafa hay this afternoon.I'm so excited.you have to understand Jerry is my first guinea pig,Ben is brother died of an groin abcess,i was mortified.I did not realise what strong feelings you can hold for these gentle animals Ilove Jerry so much.the PDSA wanted to put him to sleep.Furry friends has given me hope he can get better from this dental upset, but take it from me its like having your own children, not that ive had any.but Jerry has really grown to trust me since ive been fortce feeding him.he is so laid back,i really would be devastated if he passed away now.but i would have to much respect for him to let him suffer.does not matter how old you are,i hold these gentle creatures close to my heart..xx

Furryfriends I'm not sure exactly where jaw abcess is,as it has not presented itself yet.we suspect it is where the lower and uppe rmandible meet.I cannot thankyou so much for the referral,as the PDSA WANTED TO PTS Jerry without looking at the bigger picture.I have had depression due to losing my sister and mum within 3 months,i decided to take on guinea pigs for company and ive never looked back since.14 cavies now and i love and adore each one, they give me so much joy and purpose in life!i will be engrated to you for referring me to such a knowledgable and geniuly caring vet to these so deserving gentle rodents.xx

I know exactly what u mean by their like your children.A lot of people don't understand what lovely animals they are and don't understand how u can get so upset when they're Ill.How is your piggy today? I had a pig named Bill who had a reacurring abscess and was put on antibiotics but it got to the point where he wouldn't eat and even syringe feeding he wouldn't take, my local vets wanted him put down but I couldn't bring myself to do it and he died a week later in pain.It was heartbreaking so I really hope your little one gets through this x

hi Gem789,i hope your piggie gets better.Jerry is eating fresh grass, and ate smll size pellets today.I'm syringe feeding twice aday.he is frustrated he is unable to eat.he hates critical despite putting other flavours in to tempt him.he is chasing his sow/wives!Jerry is to go back to see simon next week.he seems well other than not eating.Simon is excellent.so thorough,he should be put up for a pet vet award.xx
