jerry's legs still no better

as i posted before, jerry lost the use of his bk legs sometime saturday while i was out when i came bk he was just dragging them behind him, took him to vets that evening, n she said there are no sign of anythink broken or damaged n no reason this should of happend, so she said its possibly a sprain from a fall off his platform which i have now removed.or a bicker with the other piggy. she advised it should be better in a couple of days, but so far its still just as bad, he has now started struggling to get around his cage and is really making a mess of his bk end as he is dragging himself into his poo when he has done it so i am having to clean him after he has been to the toilet, i put him bk in with the other piggy and they are gettin on ok now, but i just wonder, would it be best for me to house them seperatly and jerry in a smaller cage as he cant really get around very well.he sleeps in the the middle of the cage by the food and water, possibly as he doesnt have the effort to move, the vet said even if he doesnt regain use of his legs he will have a happy life, but I'm really not seeing the quality of life for him :( please advice as i *** know what to do to help him!
 
Oh poor boy :(. I don't really know what to suggest for him, but I'm sure someone else will come along soon and give you some good advice. Hope he gets better soon.
 
me to but its not looking good, he just seem to be struggling, i feel sorry bad for him, when i got him i took him straight to the vets as his hair was missing in patches, turned out he was rife with mites, so he been vets for that,he was also alot skinnier than the other one, but he has caught up a bit now after me buying most of the veg isle in asda. then about his legs now, i just dont think he is a well piggy, hes only 6 weeks old its just such a horrible start in life for him.

i cant offer you any help but someone will come along and give you some advice.

poor jerry. i know its sad but if he was my pig id definitely hang in there with him especially if the vet said he should get better? also it might be a goood idea to see a specialist vet who knows more about guineas cus this is the problems iv had before seeing vets that dont know much about guineas xx
 
You might get a better response by posting in the health and illness section as some of our more medically knowledgable people only have time to check in there.
I would think that it is not really long enough to see much improvement if the sprain only occurred on Saturday. I seem to remember that the vet recommended that you separate the boys (please correct me if I've misremembered that) so it probably is best to do that. Your other guinea pig will not give the poorly one the chance to rest. A smaller cage is a good idea, even a reasonably sized cardboard box would do in a pinch. Limiting the area he can move around in will force him to rest. Is he on any painkilling medication?
 
Oh dear sorry to hear Jerry's leg still isn't good. I too can offer no advice I;m afraid.

Did your vet prescribe any painkiller at all? It maybe that Jerry's leg could be hurting him. I'd be tempted to give your vet a call and explain your worries and hopefully they may be able to suggest something to help

If this only happened on saturday and its now only monday morning then he will probably need more time to recover from it. Just keep an eye on him.

yea she advised seperating them as they were bickering but after put them bk together after a bout half hour the oter has left him alone now and calmed down, so he is pretty much left alone. i have put the one in the outdoor hutch today to giv ethem space, nope no painkillers as she said she wasnt under the impression that he was in any pain at all, I'm due bk there on thursday again to treat his mites still so I'm sure she will have another look at him, he doesnt apper to be in any pain, just isnt really offerin to move around, i mean aslong as he is eating and drinkin I'm not to majorly worried, just hope he improves as this isnt much of a life for him atm poor little thing
 
Poor little baby, hope he feels better soon. It may be an idea to speak to your vet about pain relief before Thursday as guinea pigs hide their pain.
 
ooo i will do, hes fine being handled doesnt seem to mind me touching his legs or anythink, he seems pretty chilled out but just disturbes me that hes dragging his legs, its not as bad as it was at 1st but its still not right,
 
he doesnt seem bothered by it at all, he will quiet happiler sit there n let me fuss him from top t toe n he seems happy, i just *** like thhe fact hes not walking to well, but apart from not walking well, n him having mites he seems perfectly happy
 
Sorry I missed this, as someone said some of us only check in on the medical section and I'm one of them, I don't post elsewhere as much but was given word of your problems with Jerry.

First of all I would consider giving a Vit C supplement, he's only small/young yet so around 50mg a day, just to be sure it's nothing along the vitamin deficiency lines.

Injury is possible but as you say he doesn't seem to be in pain, so whether an anti-inflammatory would help is debatable; something to bear in mind, though.

There is also something that Peter Gurney has written of, a sudden "overnight" paralysis that sets in due to calcium deficiency. There is a webpage about it but unfortunately it is no working at the moment. Treatment is with Osteocare (liquid calcium), dosage is 0.5ml 2x daily until the pig is up on his feet again, then the same for a further 5 days. I will need to double check the dosage with Jerry being a little one, I will confirm as soon as possible if it is something you wished to try.
 
Important update: Dosage is NOT as listed above for a 6 week old piggie. Dosage is 0.2ml 2x daily.

It is 0.5ml for an adult piggie, just wasn't sure for a little one so I checked up on it for you.
 
wants to say thanks for all your comments, but when i got jerry out his cage tonight for evening run about, his legs seem to have completly righted themselfs, I'm quiet baffled but so happy, i put him on the floor 4 5 mins b4 i put him in the indoor run, to turn around n find him runnin half way across the room, not somethink i planned on seeing but so pleased he did! onnly problem now is his cage mate seems insistant on humping him, poor jerry, one thing after the other! but he is in such a better state then when i had him. he has doubled i weight in a week and his fur patches that were missing due to the mites are growin bk slowely but surely, he is now actualy heavier than the other who was lots heaavier and bulkier than he was to start, its so rewarding taking an unwel lil guy n making him better, now i see why you lot seem so passionate about what you do!
