As Ginny seems prone to bloat or gas and feed him separate to the girls for his smaller portion of veg, I'm also planning on switching pellets. They've been on Burgess Excel Mint (which, to be honest, hasn't been fed for less than a week I think as I ran out and wasn't sure what to buy) but plan on switching to something a bit more helpful to his sensitive stomach.

I have a few questions though -
Would it be ok for the girls to be fed grainless pellets? They're still under a year I think or maybe just there and not sure if it would hinder development
Is JR Farm Grainless a good pellet brand? I've seen one say it contains quite a bit of fruit
Would something else be better?
How much would I feed? They seem quite big a piece

Thanks

I have been considering switching from Zupreem Timothy Naturals to JR grainless, would also be interested to hear opinions.

My lot have all had grain-less pellets from around 6 months of age, and Oreo much earlier because she ate them when she was introduced into the main cage at around 10 weeks old. She also had access to 'young pellets' but hated them and never ate them.

We tried JR Farm grain-less, and I have to say they were not popular with any of my pigs.
We also tried 'Bunny' which is very popular here, but not with any of my guinea pigs!

The most successful for my lot has been the Versele Laga Cavia Complete.
Over 1 year later and they still devour them.

If you want a small amount to try, just let me know and I am happy to post some to you.

That looks good, I've seen them for sale here. Mine used to like Zupreem (contains grains) until we got sent a free sample of Science Selective. Once they had tasted it, they became obsessed with it so I used it as a treat! But it does contain grains. There was an interesting thread about using grain-free to reduce bladder sludge so I had thought about trying it for Lily as she leaves a lot of calcium deposits behind in her wee. I still have quite a bit of Zupreem left, but Lily tends not to eat it all up, so I was thinking of gradually switching her over to a new pellet type. Thanks for that recommendation. Sorry to CarnivalPiggy, I didn't intend to hijack the thread! It's just that I was going to start a thread asking about JR too!

Mine really like the JR Grainless - it's usually first to go, followed by the VL mentioned above (I feed a mix of brands).

I'm also making a switch to grainless and hopefully low calcium nuggets and I also like to feed a mix (currently Burgess, Science Selective & Harringtons).

What grainless mix of nuggets do you use may I ask? I haven't tried any yet as I have loads of nuggets left and I'm worried the girls won't like the grainless as I've seen mixed reviews.

Sorry @CarnivalPiggy :))

Mine get JR Grainless, VL Cavia Complete (which I buy from RatRations as it's a bit cheaper for me buying in small amounts), and Burgess. Overall the two grainless ones make up about 50% of the nuggets.

I could send a small sample over of JR Farm Grainless if you'd like x must admit I've no idea how I'd send it lol as I don't deal a lot with deliveries but can look it up

That's so kind of you! I was actually looking to see if I could contact the company to ask for a sample, only to find it's a German company? :))

To be honest, I don't send a lot by post either so I don't even know costs or anything :hmm:

I might sound like an idiot but I honestly don't know XD

I personally don't mind if it just comes in a little bag or what ever (maybe even re-use a small cardboard box) but I don't really know how the post office does it :))

Oo a letter maybe? @Elisabeth I remember you sent me those boxes of spot on, might I ask how? I spend so much time accepting parcels (waiting on one now) for someone in my house that I've never usually sent them. Feeling right daft lol :))

I sent them direct from Ebay so no idea how much postage is sorry xx

a dear friend of mine living in UK used to send me a normal envelope with A LOT of paracetamol tablets wrapped up in aluminium foil. The envelope was light and she paid a normal stamp of a normal letter... :bal:
(paracetamol here costs 100 times more!)
You are talking about sending some sample only...:tu:
