hello
we have jessie a 1.6 year old piggy and we feed her, spinach and/or silverbeet, capsicium, herbs, grass, carrot, sweetcorn and leaves, carrot tops, apple, water and rockmelon rind, brocoli, lucerne pellets. she will pick at these, maybe eat one or two of them, but give her one of those comerical treats you can buy at the supermarket and she goes crazy on it. i only bought them as they are recomended by the rspca, i won't be buying anymore though. jessie hardly eats but still has a little pot belly. how can i get this teenage to eat her greens? thanking you in advance. hugs and cuddles to you and your babies. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

guess no one has an answer to this one, will have to figure out a solution to jessies bad eating habits. hopefully as she grows older her eating habits will improve for the better. can only persist and hopefully find something jessie likes. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

ahhhhhhhhhh yep it's the molasses they get addicted to it, we had the same problem, when we got our boys they were brought up on a feed mix that had molasses in it.... it took me months to change them over :D :D :D
all i can suggest is slowly wean her off them and replace it each time with a little bit more of her fav fruit or veggie O0
cheeky piggies eh.... it's unfortunate that they still produce these things as they're not good for them ............ as you and i have learnt thru here :smitten:

I was the same when I tried to switch there dry food. They where on Gerty but started to pick out bit and leave the rest also I found out it was not very good for piggies so decided to switch to super excel and it took them months to start eating it. Now they cannot get enough and there bowls get empty very fast.

Piggies are just like us they only like junk food :tickedoff:

Keep at it and they will start eating the good veggies soon O0

If you leave her with the new foods she'll eventually get the idea. It's a similar thing to humans... spend your whole life eating pizza and chocolate and suddenly the broccoli and beans don't look so appetising. If she lives with other piggies she'll also end up copying them. I have a pig I need to be careful with when she's on the floor as she will literally eat ANYTHING in her way.

I would also get her off the lucerne (alfalfa) pellets as these are too high in calcium for an adult piggy.

i would love to get her off the lucerne pellets but they are the only ones available here in south australia. she lives in the same box as zoe but the cage is halved till zoe gets better, as zoe has had surgery, on a grass hay diet. and jessie when on heat mounts zoe and bosses zoe around. am still looking for timothy hay grass for them, and i am looking into the oxbow pellets, our vet is going to try and get some in for us. there is only one place in south australia where you can get these from. glynis sent me some samples which lasted 10 days but only faline the bunny liked them. thanks for the advice i am trying to get the proper ones, but you go into a petshop or fodder store and ask for ox box pellets or timothy grass hay and they look at you as if you came from mars. life for piggies in south australia isn't easy! especially with the lack of vet knowledge. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: thanks again. hugs and cuddles to you and your piggies. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
