Hello PiggyHumanOwners.
I hope the holiday season is treating you well.
Done a lot of research and checking others posts on here and feel it’s better I just post a video of them. It seems that LaLa (white) keep annoying her sister Niya. Niya will flick her off from time to time but usually just goes off and drinks some water hoping her sister is no longer ‘on one’ but this is an example of them. This is ‘normal’ right?

Background: rescued in October at less than a year old. They’re quite relaxed with us it’s just each other at times. This video was this morning and happens daily so I try to give separate lap and floor times to give them a break from each other.

Note: I tried to upload a video from my iPhone and it said the format was incorrect. I have created an online YouTube video so that I can show you the video! :)

Hi! It looks to me that they are not getting on all that well. Have you had Lala checked for ovarian cysts?

Hey Wiebke
I haven’t yet. Thinking to take them to the vet over the Christmas period. I’ve seen that as an issue to be considered but wanted to know what you experts think. :) thank you for taking the time to check them out for me.

SYMPTOMS AND TYPES
  • Loss of appetite and subsequent loss in body weight
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort
  • Avoidance of touch due to pain
  • Hair loss on or around the abdomen
  • Infertility
So the above are in relation to Ovarian Cysts. I don’t recognise any symptoms in either piggies especially LaLa. I think we can rule this out. She is smaller than her sister in general. If anything they have gained weight since I’ve had them! Any thoughts welcomed.

I wouldn’t rule ovarian cysts out yet. Only a vet check can do this. One of the symptoms is appearing to be constantly in season - rumbling and mounting.
Just a few other things off the top of my head - is their cage big enough? Do they have enough hideys? Is the fact that you separate them for floor time and lap time the issue - piggies don’t deal with being separated and it can cause them to need to reassert their dominance. Equally, handling the submissive pig first can cause the dominant pig to reassert dominance.

Piggies&buns thank you for your response. That’s REALLY helpful.
Cage could be too small but they also have a run they use daily. They have a couple of tunnels and a big hidey house which I rotate in when cleaning. I’ve been taking the submissive one out more especially if I see her sister giving her a hard time (she will be laying her sleeping and her sister will come over and poke and prod her with her nose or similar to the video) but I understand that could be causing part of the issue. I will def take them to the vet as I read that they hide any sicknesses so it’s hard to tell. I hope it’s nothing serious! Will update here the progress of this. Thanks again :)

It’s good that they have a run that they can use every day but if their cage is too small then being locked in for some of the time won’t help. 120cm is the smallest cage you should consider, but if their relationship is strained (after you’ve ruled out medical issues) then increasing cage size can be a good place to start to help to resolve things.
Giving them a hidey each (or multiples) is also a good idea. I have four hideys between my two boars.
To reiterate though medical issues first!
Hope you can get to the bottom of the problem and that they can live together happily.

I would still check for ovarian cysts.
Jemimah ended up having emergency surgery for ovarian cysts - she showed none of these symptoms.
I hope it isn't but it's always worth ruling things out
Let us know how things go

I definitely will update everyone. I find this forum so helpful! Thanks Merabs Slave
