next year i plan on working abroad for about 12 months my pets will sadly be left behind hopefully il be able to find someone to look after them while I'm away my biggest problem is with me planning on working away theres no way i can get any more pets meaning that one of my rabbits will have to stay single until i come back and Joey my Guinea Pig will to, problem is Joey gets extremely depressed by himself and he has to live oppisite Binky my single rabbit or he stops eating, i generally believe he would love other Guinea Pigs as friends and planned to have him neutered so icould do this but this isnt possible with my current plans ive spoke to my mum about this and she mentioned rehoming Joey to someone who can offer him a friend as he would be happier my problem is i love Joey far to much and would be absolutly hearbroken letting him go :( but i feel I'm being selfish.

I do have Roo as well but the way he is at the moment i seriously doubt he'll be alive by the end of this year :'(

what do yous think i should do?

1) get him neutered then find him a great home where he can be bonded with other Guinea Pigs
2) leave him as he is for 2 years then get him a friend

i really do think he will benefit by having a friend or 2, its your decision and you are in a horrible situation :(

Sorry about your situation. It's hard when you're young with piggies. I worked abroad for 3 months when my last piggy was alive when I was 18 and my mum looked after him. I'd already made the decision not to get any more after he passed away (he died 5 months after I came back) until I was finished university and settled. It's really up to you if you want to get him a friend but you need to consider what you'll be doing and the attention they'll get from you, longer term, too.

Perhaps someone here or someone else you know may be able to foster them while you're away?

i obviously have a few months to decide i will be getting Joey neutered within the next 6 weeks once ive bought the rabbits new big hutches. i was going to go travelling once my pets had gone but thinking about it that could be 10 years and by then il probably be tied down with kids and everything so i think its best travelling now that I'm young even though theres going to be tough decisions regarding my pets :( i just wish id thought about these things before getting them :(

fostering him whilst you are away to someone or maybe a rescue locally might be able to help out some how?
Good luck with what ever decision you make
:smitten:

Hi

2 in a cage isn't much extra work. Seems a shame to leave him so long without a friend.

Please don't put him with the Rabbit though, as that's not a good idea.

Jaye

dont worry i would never put a Guinea Pig in with a rabbit :) my plan was to get Joey a friend but with me travelling i cant see a rescue accepting me to adopt fronm them knowing fine well i was going travelling next year and leaving them behind :( but i will deffinatly be having a think about it for the next couple of months get Joey neutered and go from there :)

If you have Joey neutered that may be massively helpful. I would try and find him a lady friend before you go away. 2 pigs is not much extra to care for, like Jaye said, and it means all the carer of your animals has to do is check them over, check their food, water & clean them out, as having 2 means they amuse each other.

well i have decided that once Joey has been neutered and hes recovered and is no longer fertile i will get him a friend or two I'm hoping a rescue will accept me but if iim honest i have doubts :( if rescues fail i will go on free ads and look for a girly through there but i totally refuse point blank going to a petshop or breeder. i will then have the hardjobfinding someone tolook after them while I'm away for 6-12 months

I would look after them for you but you are so far away from me :(

Is there someone near you on this forum who would look after them for you?

I'm in Northumberland so would be happy for someone to take care of them from teh Northeast anywhere in Northumberland/Newcastle/Tyne and wear etc. but i probably wont be travelling until next year but its also possible that if a job comes up this year i could be contacted so really need a home lined up just incase of short notice :-\

I'm really gutted that I'm so far away (in Suffolk!)

Really hope you find a good foster carer for them. Might be an idea to have some socialising visits prior to the big move anyway.

I'm sure there's someone on this forum who lives in the north east and could take them in for you! If you don't get any replies on this thread try posting in the rescue section. Obv your pig won't be permanate rescue, but maybe someone could foster him for a year?
