Just need some moral support. Op booked

Hi

Great news. Dry skin flaps can happen as part of the healing process; they tend to be a bit itchy. They are harmless but they have the potential to really upset you the first time you come across. They are more common with some much more solid stitching techniques which prevent a ripping of the scar and any healing tissue and any infection getting in.

Otherwise the tissue looks fine for thise stage and not too badly swollen. All the best for a good further recovery.

Thank you all… one thing I am marginally concerned about is there are some squinting episodes still, but it does look sore and that at times and I just need to see. Even if she is squinting at least there’s no hairs rubbing! She seems to eat and be fine so

My dad’s just had a cataract operation and he’s two weeks post op and he’s still a little uncomfortable in the eye. I know it’s not the same thing but maybe she needs a little more time to start to feel better.

Just hang on in there, continue with your eye drops and it will heal in the coming days. You are still only a couple of days post-procedure, if I am right? So the healing process should get really going in the coming days.

Yeah, there arnt many owners who have had entropion surgery on their pigs. I managed to speak to someone online who had their skinny pig have the surgery. They said they didn’t see immediate results until the swelling and stitches were out

Waiting is always extra hard for somebody with your level of anxiety but please hang on in there for just a few more days. Things are on the right way.

Hello all,

I’m ever so sorry I haven’t been on here at all. Life just took over and I needed a break from a lot of things because I was overwhelmed. I have come back on to say the healing is fully done and she’s had her post op checks. There is no squinting at all anymore, but he honestly and openly said that he may have very very marginally over corrected it, very very slightly, but nothing that’s going to cause a problem and he would of rather done it that way than to need to be put under again being a Guniea pig. The eyelid sits nice and flat, but maybe it sits a tad on the lower side now, the main thing is she isn’t being irritated by it anymore and she seems so much more happy!

I did notice even before the operation that when I pulled her lower lid down for drops etc, her conjunctival sac was a little fatty and more pronounced. I believe they call it fatty eye or something? I had an older pig develop this with age, but she is young and I am worried it could be more cause for concern? the surgeon specialist didn’t seem to be worried about it at all and it was nothing to do with the operation because she had it before. Obviously where it sits very very slightly lower and flatter you can see it a bit more… I hope this all makes sense and again I’m sorry for not being in touch! I hope everyone is well

Hi there absolutely no need to apologise at all.
I'm just pleased that all is going well and that you are both in a better place because that's the important thing 😔

Hi

Thank you for the update. I am so glad that all has gone well and that your girl can enjoy her life fully now.

A slightly looser lid is nothing to worry about. How much of the conjunctiva is showing depends on genetics and how tight the lid fits.
'Fatty eye' is not an issue with the conjunctiva itself but with the lid losing that bit of tension and gravity taking over, exposing the conjunctiva. It is generally a genetic and ageing issue. In my own experience with a number of cases over the years, it doesn't make the conjunctiva any more prone to infections - I never had any issues.

She will be perfectly fine with having fatty eye at a younger age. I have piggies living for quite a number of years with it, and it never caused any issues, except that she may be a little more likely of catching a hay stalk in the gap that would have otherwise ended up a hay poke in the eye. ;)

@Gadzy I hope that the recovery is going smoothly now?

Yes, I believe that side of the face was always on the looser side, and it definitely sits marginally on the lower side now. The eyelid itself is flat and there are no hairs what so ever affecting her eye. When she lies down now the conjunctiva sac is not showing, only when she’s out and about do you notice it more. As you said it’s just gravity and nothing to worry about? Do you think the procedure has just caused it to be more noticeable? Either way her eye is much more clear and no scarring from rubbing eyes!

Can young pigs have fatty eye or do you think it’s just a combination of the op and the gravity showing more of it? As I said I used to notice it when I pulled her lid down for drops. The other side of her face/eyes and skin is definitely on the tighter side. Always has been since I got her

Thanks again all :)

Hi

Whether it is genetic or a result of the operation, I would frankly not worry. There is nothing that needs doing; it is just her personal quirk which is making her unique.
Instead of worrying about it try to cherish it because there is nothing you can do about it and nothing that needs doing about. Be proud of having given her a pain-free eye.

And enjoy giving her a happy life beyond her wildest dreams.

Thank you - I noticed an old post of yours with one of your pigs and it’s exactly the same. I have attached your picture to remind, but that’s literally it. It’s taking me a while to look at her and get used to it. It definitely harmless then? She seems fine in herself? Just worried of her scratching it etc

Yes, it is most definitely harmless and you can most definitely stop worrying and overthinking about the eye now. Some piggies only have it on one side and some on both sides. It's just healthy pink conjunctiva that is peeking through. :tu:
