Hello,

We were giving Benny a hair trim when I noticed a dried poo on his foot. I eased it off with some water and tissue, but when it came off , I was left with a red open wound, so the poo must have been sitting on top of a scab.

So what is the best course of action? We have put on a plaster with some padding on as a temporary measure to keep it clean. Obviously we do not want him to eat it, so will be watching him this evening. He is on Metacam twice daily anyway, so we have given him this. We also have a stock of Baytril if needed.

How should we proceed - is this a definite vets visit needed, or should we see how he progresses? When he lost a nail we were advised to give him twice daily salt baths and keep an eye out for infection, which didn't materialise. Does the same apply here? I don't want to give him a salt bath straight away as I imagine it will be painful. Or would this be the best course of action?

He is happy running moving about and is eating away happily on some 'please forgive me' veggies.

Thanks for any advice offered.

If you have got baytril, then you could wait until Monday, but please have it seen. I would give it a salt bath from tomorrow morning onwards just to make sure that there is no infection.

It must have been quite a shock for you!

Thanks Wiebke - How much Baytril do you think?

We've just taken the plaster off as he was chewing it, so it's exposed now.

It was a big shock and couldn't have come at a worse time - we lost our Butters yesterday, which was completely unexpected and involved 2 vet trips, 1 in the middle of the night and I had work today so I am shattered and so if I can hold off on the vet visit, then I would like to, but if it is essential he is seen asap, then I'll do it this evening if we have too.

Is there anything else I can do to help him?

Sorry to hear you lost Butters yesterday :( So I have no advice to offer. A Wiebke has said a bit of baytril won't hurt at all.

Am sorry about Butters. Like the others have said I would suggest keeping it clean until you can get to a vet on Monday. If he seems in pain at all then if you already have any pain relief give him some if not ask the vet about it on Monday.

Thank you both. We took Butters for a check up on Thursday morning as he had developed a small bald patch on his belly. When we got there his breathing was laboured. The vet thought he may have a URI which had been there and triggered by the car journey, but by bed time he was worse so we took him back and he passed away early Friday. The vet thinks it was likely he had an underlying heart problem which something triggered, perhaps even the stree of the journey. The bald patch was nothing to worry about either so I feel guilty on top of it all.

Its so hard to comprehend as he had made the journey many times and had recently had an eye removed and showed no signs of stress but she thought that it was going to happen and anything could have triggered it, even without a vets trip.

As fofr Benny, what sort of Baytril dose would you recomend?
