was having a mooch around pre-loved for any runs for sale for when we get our piggies, and found an ad for some guineas needing rehoming as their owners didnt have time for them any more. said they had a huge hutch to go with them which was in excellent shape, just a bit of normal wear and tear, and the guineas are in fab shape and really healthy.
well, kind of found ourselves going for a road trip today to pick them up. got there to find a 3.5ft double hutch, covered in layers of cobwebs and dirt in the roof and on the sides inside, and the floors and about 6" up all the sides were caked in soaking wet filthy sawdust, dirt, straw. ive never seen a hutch so wet and disgusting with animals only just removed. the pigs were in a cardboard box but were covered in god knows what, the ones with white bits were actually yellow and their little feet had poops stuck in between their toes. first thoughts, get them home. so we bundled everything into the car (knocking off as many of the spiders and as much of the filth as we could beforehand) and came home.
when we got home, we decided that instead of simply washing out the hutch as best we could, we would dismantle and scrub down the whole hutch. we bathed and then put the 4 girls into a nice clean indoor cage in the warm, they actually fought to get to the water bottle, so we added a 2nd bottle alongside the first, they were at the water bottles for around 10-15 mins taking it in turns and they drank an awful lot. i then added a big bowl of nuggets, they surrounded it and were eating faster than i have ever seen pigs eat. no idea how long the poor girls were stuck in that little box before we got there.
the hutch is now in pieces, its all been scrubbed down and disinfected,we had to take a wallpaper scraper to the sides and floors >>> the top floor has rotten away so we will replace it tomorrow, and as the hutch is only 3.5ft x 1ft, even though its a double, it will be upgraded by the end of the month to something more suitable. they have chewed away large portions of the ramp, and the floors and doors, my guess would be boredom.
so in 1 day we have gone from pigless, to taking on 4 pigs who were just needing to be rehomed due to lack of time to more or less a rescue for these poor girlies. needless to say, they will be very well looked after and spoilt rotten for the rest of their days. hoping to bond them with the 2 baby sows i will be taking from my friend when they are old enough, and all will live in the large hutch/run combo we are setting up asap.
its so nice to hear piggies chatting to each other
