i just thought i might aswell check up here. i'm considering getting some more piggles, as i've lost 3 since christmas 8... one to a brain tumour, one to old age at six, and my four year old had a stroke a few weeks ago. i now have three guinea pigs, and i intend to keep guinea pigs for a long time. i've also just been given a MASSIVE hutch for them.

i've always quite wanted a himmy, but i live in the east midlands, and breeders are hard to come by. i found a woman on preloved that breeds himmys in nottingham. i had a bad experience with a hobbyist gecko breeder last year, so i'd rather be cautious. i'm just wondering if anyone on here has heard of or dealt with 'karen's cavies' at all?

I think that as this is a pro rescue forum you will not get replies about breeders.
Have you thought about adding a rescue pig to your collection?

i know that it is pro rescue, but surely people do still buy from breeders? the 4 year old that passed away recently was a rescue piggle. and there aren't an amazing amount of rescued himalayan guinea pigs within a 3 hour drive radius of me. if i were to get more, then i'd possibly rescue again, but i've had my heart set on a himalayan for a while, so i was just curious as to whether anyone on here has heard of this particular breeder, as i don't know where else to ask.

The vast majority of people on here do actually rehome from rescues or join after they got shop piggies with problems.

I know Brecklen have recently had 3 himi's in at the same time and Sophie has has one in too, all within about the last month. There may have been more than that. Himi's are in rescues if your prepared to wait and look around for them.

If they are further away piggie trains may be organised to get them to you.

most places also require home checks, which aren't possible if i live hours away. i hope this doesn't come across the wrong way, but if i really want to buy a guinea pig from a decent breeder (deciding whether this breeder is decent or not was the reason for this thread), then i don't really see the problem with it?

Yes this is a pro-rescue forum so you won't get advice on breeders here I'm afraid. Personally I can't see why any "reputable" breeder would have to advertise on preloved.

i actually joined after i got my rescue piggles, as i thought it'd be better to rescue rather than go to a breeder. however, a recent letdown as far as rescues go (not with guinea pigs), has made me rather cautious. i think i posted about it here.

i thought that, which is why i asked. but the last guinea pig i bought was from a breeder on preloved, and she seemed pretty decent, and the guinea pig is amazing. and i've bought animals from 'reputable' breeders and it's ended badly :(

Home visits are possible where ever you live, someone local to you will do the homevisit for the rescue. We have had a rabbit go to live 8 hours away and we carried out the home visit without any problems at all.

As for breeders I wouldn't go to one, so I can't help you with that. A decent breeder should want to do a home check too and they won't advertise on preloved. There should also be a waiting list for the type of piggy you want.

i agree about the waiting list, but i do disagree with this part. my sister is a really reputable fancy rat breeder, and as far as i'm aware, she doesn't so home checks. she makes the new owner sign agreements, keeps in contact and makes sure they know what they're supposed to, but she doesn't do home checks. that doesn't make her a bad breeder.

out of curiosity, why is everyone so dead set about breeders? hobbyist breeders aren't the reason there are so many homeless guinea pigs. owners making a commitment that they can't keep, and the odd out of control breeders are the cause of that. oh, and bad pet shop sexing, too.

sorry, i just don't understand what's wrong with it :s

edit: p.s. this isn't as defensive as it sounds... it's hard to make points over the internet :p

after searching for a while, i've found a himmy up for adoption. but that rescue only rehomes within a 30 mile radius, as they do home checks. it's about 3 hours away from me, which also sucks.

My girls came from England when I lived in Belfast. Were there is a will there is away my girl recently met a boar friend himi sadly she declined him so I couldn't take him but he was in a rescue.

Even although they say they will only home within a 30 mile radius I would still ask! Whats the worst they can say?!

Also rescues have alot more piggies than on there website so I would still phone and ask.

i have asked. it seems like it could work, and he is a very cute little guy. though he has impaction. i'm not sure how i'd manage with that, but i guess it's something you'd get used to.
