I have two short haired male guinea pigs, who I have had for about 18 months now. They have always seemed to keep themselves clean with no problems, until the last week or two I have noticed that one of them has a filthy behind. He is a cream coloured pig and he has a messy dirty patch around his bottom.

I always assumed guinea pigs cleaned themselves, but apparently not in this case. I can't think of anything he'd hate more than having me wash him but I'm beginning to think maybe I should? His brother is still spotless.

is it around his 'botty' :embarassed: as their is a grease gland just above their that needs checking regularly and cleaning if its 'sticky'

Agree with Ron it sounds like their grease glands. You can rub a bit of swarfega onto it & shampoo off as normal. Swarfega is available at Wilko or Halfords or you can use a bit of washing up liquid :)

Yeah it sounds like the grease gland to me - this shows up really quite dirty on some lighter coloured piggies.

Hope you get it cleaned up nice for him!

That sounds like it! Dreading having to wash him, he is the wriggliest piggy in the world ;D Maybe I'll combine with cutting his toenails, which also needs doing.
