Hi everybody, just got a quick question for you, any help would be much appreciated :)

I'm taking my guinea pig to the vet's tommorrow morning, nothing wrong with him, but he needs his nails trimmed and I've never felt confident enough to do it myself.

The vet's is a 5 minute walk down the road, I don't drive so I will be walking. I usually take him in a carry bag that I line with hay at the bottom, and he's quite happy in there. However it's now obviously got a a lot colder, and I'm worried that he'll get too cold on the way there and back. He lives indoors, so is probably getting used to the heating being on for parts of the day!

Thanks in advance again,

Hayley (and Sir William Humphrey my guinea)

I walk to my vet too its a 10 min walk, i took rosie and her 2 week old pups and they were grand
I took a box and lined it with newspaper and loads of hay then got a bigger cardboard box and popped the smaller one inside it, they could breath as i didnt tightly close the lids. O0

Absolutely lurrrrrrrve his name! Bless him 0:)

I would put him in a box in a box (if you get my drift) and put a warm (not piping hot) hot water bottle in the gap in between the two boxes. Plenty of towels too. Good luck O0

hey i went to the vets last 2 weeks ago with morgan, it was really cold then too! i have a carry box like one for a cat, i put a blanket inside and leave enough to cover the sides of the box and leave some hanging at the front, tuck the blanket at the sides up and put them through the air hole slots and put it dow through the next one so its secure, do that at all four corners of the box it stops cold wind getting in! and then put a big pile of hay in, when you close the box lift up the bit of blanet you left at the opening and tuck it over (from the inside) and that cover the front of the box, some air still gets in, it just stops the cold wind getting to your guinea pig :)

I took Peggy to the vets last week, its also a 5 minute walk. I wrapped her up snug with vet bed, fleece, blankets and hay! I used blankets to block the wind in the baskets air holes. She was snug and warm!

in a world where there is so much animal abuse and lack of care isnt it nice that we care so much, it just kind of touched me today, its not all bad is it ;)

Its lovely. Since I've found this forum, I keep thinking about how some people really do care about their animals. Working at the vets can be disheartneing at times, but coming on here always makes me feel better about the world.

There's some brilliant ideas there, thanks everybody, I'm sure he'll be all warm and cosy tommorow morning now! Probably won't want to go back into his home when we get back :)

Thanks again :)

You're welcome! :)

Just a thought, have you got one of those heat pad things? Or one of those wheat bags that you heat up in the microwave?

Thing is, only the bad things in life are highlighted. I think some of the things you people do here is incredible and I admire your devotion to the cause. Th only problem is, your only hear stuff when some total tosser is mistreating animals

Sorry to tell you off (I realise you are quite new) but there are quite a lot of children using this site so we prefer to put ****** in when we need to say a bad word! Just a word of advice - please don't take offence! O0

I took Alex pig to the vets for nuetering today and bought him back again, and he was fine! He insisted on being UNDER his blanket, which is fine by me. Kept him snug. :smitten:

Awwwwww! Bless little Alex 0:) Glad it all went well. Am thinking of getting my lone boar neutered so I can get a sow hutch buddy for him - really not sure as I know there can be complications and I'd hate to lose him.

Black Jack, there will always be risks, but you can really minimise them by finding a god vet. O0 A vet with knowledge of 'exotics' such as piggies is the best bet. Ask them loads of questions, how often they've castrated piggies, how successful they've been etc.

My vet has loads of piggie knowledge, and has done this op millions of times, with an extremely high success rate, so I feel confident letting him do it.

I'd love to, but I'm not sure he'd be willing. I lose him soon too, because he is leaving the practice in december. :'(
