Hi everyone, hope everyone & their piggies are well?

I’ve been at the vets today with the gorgeous Bramble as I knew he wasn’t quite himself the last few weeks.

A couple of weeks ago on weigh in day he had lost 53g so I switched to day on day weighing to keep an eye on things. He’s a chunky boy so that took him to 1477g. Behaviour wasn’t really any different other than drinking a little more (he’s done this in the past then stopped).

He also had a sore eye so I got him checked over at our exotic vet, got some metacam & ointment. He seemed a bit better for a few days and his weight was stable.

On Thursday this week he was constantly humping his Brother, he got boar glue literally all over him! That night his poops were a bit loose & he just seemed a bit off. Friday when I weighed him he’d lost 25g.

His poops did firm up a touch but still a bit off so I booked him in for the vets today. Took in a urine sample for them as well.

On examination he was a touch gassy & she said his guts were maybe a little too noisy? On testing his urine, although he had no protein or blood she said it was too diluted & the specific gravity wasn’t right suggesting a kidney issue. She had time to get him an ultrasound this afternoon. The results weren’t good as he has kidney disease(crying my eyes out while I write this), it showed that his left kidney was slightly enlarged near where his urine goes before the bladder. Right one is fine but she said it can’t compensate for what’s going on with the left.

So obviously I understand that it can’t be treated but I just wondered if anyone had any hints or tips to maybe help maybe slow it down? He’s only 2 years old & it just feels so cruel. His actual brother died last year from a variety of issues but one of those was kidney failure which we didn’t know about til days after his death.

I am supplementing him with Science Selective Recovery twice a day, know that might have to increase. We are waiting for some cisapride for his gut issues. He also had a antisickness injection today. They did suggest getting some Sherwood Rabbit pellets to make paste from instead of the Science Selective.

She is having a meeting with the other exotic vets this week to see if there is anything we can do. She has suggested sending the urine away to see how much creatinine is in it to try & gauge how advanced it is?

I guess I’m hoping for a miracle that won’t come? We’ve had such a crappy time!

Thanks in advance & sorry if I’ve missed bits out! x

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry that on top of your ringworm issues you have received even worse news.

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about kidney failure in guinea pigs. There is no really effective medication and there are no dietary or other measures that can consistently buy more lifetime. I really wish I had better news.

You just couldn’t write it, we’ve been through so much together, after his appetite was thrown off last year with an adverse reaction to medicine which took months of various medications & months of syringe feeding, he bounced back fantastic just to have this happen feels especially cruel.

Do you have any experience with life span with this? Just want to make sure he enjoys every day. Lots of chin rubs!

Do you know where I could get Sherwood Ranbit pellets as the vet suggested that might be better for him than critical care etc? x

Sorry, I can't answer either question. You have to cherish every day with him. Piggies don't have a concept for an average life span; they measure a good life in happy todays. We humans should actually take more of a leaf out of it. I am certainly living my new life like that - day by day.

Sherwood is not a brand we generally recommend. If you really want to use any rabbit pellets, please be aware that they are not reinforced with vitamin C as rabbits can make their own, so you would have to additionally cover that in order to avoid scurvy issues. You may want to ask your vet what their reasons are for this rather unusual recommendation.
Generally, we recommend to go very lightly on pellets on this forum these days. There has been a major rethink in terms of pellets and forage in recent years.
