Has anyone had any experience with piggies and kidney infections?. Any information or advice would be greatfully recieved. Thanks

We had kidney stones & kidney failure in Cloud last year. What is it you need to know?

I took Midge back today for another consult (different vet) and because of the pain she is still experiencing when her back end/ tummy and sides are touched he thinks its a kidney infection instead of the usual uti although she doesnt hunch up any more when passing wee/poo. She is still on baytril and metacam and to see how she goes. The good news is that she has a huge appetite and she has gained weight- all be a small amount. Just wanted to know if there was anything I could give/feed her to help the recovery along. She has pro-c in her water unlimited meadow hay as well as up to 3 different forages at once or if there are any foods to avoid ?.

If the Baytril doesn't help then I would ask for more investigations or a referral to an exotics vet for further investigations. Have they checked a urine sample to see what the infection is?

It's definitely a good sign that she has a good appetite :). Are you already giving a probiotic? I use Bio Lapis & the guineas love it. You could try feeding some grass from your garden too, mine always see this as a real treat in the winter!

As we had kidney stone issues with Cloud, we tried a lower calcium diet with his brother Willow but I don't think that would be any help with kidney infections. I know some people give cranberry juice to help with kidney or baldder infections.

if your vets are not especially familiar with piggies i would take her to a cavy savvy vet.

while metacam is a fantastic pain relief, if her problem is her kidneys i would be cautious as to how much i was using as metacam can be damaging to kidneys. but it is hard to know what to do for the best until you have a clearer diagnosis, which is why finding a cavy savvy vet is the best way to go.

does she drink a lot? piggies with kidney issues usually do.

if your vet is thinking it may be kidney related i would also get her heart checked, as pebble suggested in your previous post, as signs of one can sometimes mean an issue with the other.

i was once told that pears are very good for kidneys and a few years ago when i had a piggy with confirmed kidney failure he gradually went off various foods but always loved pear.
