One of my guineas pepper stuggles with sensitivities so we have to be careful with bedding. At the moment we use a thick layer of newspaper, and then a big pile of hay. This is cleaned out every 4 days. However, i’m self isolating as i’ve tested positive (even though i have no symptoms!) and we only have 1 newspaper. I’ve contacted everyone i can and no one can bring newspaper to me until monday - far too late! I was wondering whether i could use thick kitchen roll at the bottom of the cage underneath the newspaper so it’s absorbent enough? I was wondering whether this was a good idea?

What about asking on that neighbourhood website? Think it’s called “Nextdoor” you could appeal for newspapers to be left in a dry place outside? Otherwise have you a few old towels you could sacrifice? Kitchen paper may be fine through

Cardboard, old towels, folded fleece blanket or a quilted mattress cover would tie you over until Monday. Is there someone who could pick up a packet of puppy pads for you? They would probably work the best.
Good luck in sorting something.
I hope you remain symptom free.

Thank you everyone! I’ve tired everywhere - no one is keeping newspapers now and they’ve stopped leaving them outside the station where i live apparently. So would kitchen roll not be suitable? If i found some old towels would they be enough?

You could use kitchen paper under the towels, double absorption. Sure either will be fine!

We use towels when my flat-mats are drying... they end up looking grim but it all washes out! Don't use biological washing powder... if that's all you've got just do a 60 wash with no liquid. Pigs don't mind stains. They would be wet through after 4 days so I'd change every 2 if they pee all over the place or if you have a wooden hutch which would get wet on the floor.

I also use old nappies/towels cut to about tea-towel size that I fold and put in pee-heavy corners... stops it spreading too far!

My kitchen towel is the thin, collapsible variety so can't help you there 😉

Good luck with the covid - and have a healthy New Year!

Oh no.... I have absolutely tons of newspapers.... I live in Nottinghamshire...not sure where u live!

How about sticking a sign in your window "Newspapers wanted" - if it can be seen from the street?
Mind you, you might not want to advertise your covid situation?
Maybe they'll just think you're a hoarder!
