I just went to check on the piggies to see if they were scared of the fireworks and when Kizzy turned round I noticed there was something puffed out of her eye. The corner of her eye where the tear duct is, is puffed up and a bit red. I don't think she can blink n the middle of her eye looks dried out. Looking closer it looks like her whole eye is puffed out n she can't close the eye lids round it properly. I have washed it with cool boiled water but nothing came out. Has anyone got any ideas what it could be? I am gonna ring the vet now n see if I can get her in.

got appointmet, going now. Fingers crossed she will be fine

Could be hay poke, or a piece of hay stuck in the tissues around the eye. The vet will probably give you Fucithalmic Eye drops if there has been an injury on the eye/tissues around it. Good luck, keep us updated!

The vet gave us some of the Fucithalmic gel stuff for a scratch on her eye but she said that the swelling might be an abcess. She couldn't get Kizzy to open up to have her teeth checked but will try again sat morning. Kizzy has some baytril and metacam to try and get rid of any abcess. The vet did say that the worst case sceiario would be an operation and Kizzy might lose her eye but it it the worst case if nothing elsae works.

Very unlikely to be related to her teeth.
Very unlikely that she would need to have the eye removed.
Chloramphenicol ointment, available from your local chemist, is very effective in dealing with a superficial eye infection.

Hi there,

Just keep a very, very close eye on it and follow the vet's instructions. In my experience, eye problems can either respond well to treatment and clear quickly or deteriorate very rapidly.

Although I've only had 7 piggies in my life, two of them have had to have eyes removed due to infection. The operations were successful - Warren was already quite old and lived another 2 years. Celyn is still fat and sassy after his in July.

Just watch very, very closely and best of luck!

Do you recon it is all just to do with this scratch? What is the chance that there is something wrong behind her eye cuz the vet seemed to think the scratch and the swelling were probably not related.

The swelling has gone down since yesterday and I could almost get her eye shut to rub in the gel this morning, yesterday evening I couldn't. The vet also gave me baytril to give .7mls once a day not .4mls to give twice a day, does anyone know if there are any benefits or problems with this dose or is it pretty much the same?

My experience is pretty well only from 2 pigs with eye problems that ended up having eyes removed and 1 that didn't.

In the one that didn't, there was clearly a scratch on the eye surface, possibly from a rogue bit of wire that held the water bottle in place. It was either eyedrops or ointment (apologies, I can't remember which as it was a few years back) that cleared it up.

With the other two, it looked different - not just weepy and swollen around the eye. The actual eyeball seemed to be enlarged or at least pushed forward so it was much more prominent and almost bulging out of it's socket.

In Warren's case, it turned out to be an abcess behind the eyeball that was pushing it forward. Treatment with antibiotics wasn't enough to shrink down the abcess so the eye could be saved.

With Celyn, the vet who did it insisted that there was nothing untoward behind the eye - that the inflammation/infection was contained within the eyeball itself. Again, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment had had no real effect.

Just as piggies can heal very, very rapidly, inflammation can also escalate very rapidly. Still got fingers crossed for you and Kizzy.

This sounds similar to how Kizzy is and what the vet said about there maybe being an abcess. I am about to go and do the meds for her now so I will be able to see how she is doing and if the swelling has gone down any more.

It is looking better than it was a few days ago. On monday I had almost given up hope on the idea that it would get better cuz it just kept getting worse but now it looks like the medicine is working. :<> :<> :<> The swelling has been going down slowly for a few days and is now nearly gone and the eye ball is not as cloudy and blood shot as it was.

Oh great news! It sounds like it's responding well to the treatment. I seem to recall the cloudiness can stick around for awhile, so don't be alarmed if that doesn't clear up straight away. Hope Kizzy continues to get better each day.

As I was putting the pigs to bed last night I saw what looked like sleep in her eye n had a better look n I think it was a grass seed. It was sticking out more this morning but by the time we went to the vet at tea time it was gone, hopefully it worked itself out. The vet was really happy with how she is doing and thinks that it will clear up if i keep up with the meds for another week n then bring her in for a check. :)
