My Guinea pigs hay had a large feather in, should I mention this to pets at home wher I bought this from ? Should there be more quality control or is this just something that happens with hay ?

birds can have germs, so if i were you i would mention it and maybe they can replace it for you? ive never found anything but hay in my hay bags haha. if you make a thing about it, perhaps they will compensate.

I found a squashed beer can in mine:( and sis in law found sweet wrappers and i think Bellasmummy found something in hers not too long aga, they may compensate as they can afford to so its worth asking, but i do think its quite common

what a silly statement! yes birds can have 'germs' as you say....so can your piggy! so can you! but this is a single feather...detatched from the bird, laid out to dry with the grass, then baled up and all the dust extracted. the chances of there being harmful germs on a single feather are slim to none. parasites cannot survive on a single feather, they need the whole host. there is no need to make a song and dance about it....and to ask for compensation for a bale of hay with a feather in? they'd send you packing out the door with a whole heap of laughter... i can see why you'd ask for a new bale if there was a beer can or something sharp in there, again, it cant be helped but that does pose more of a danger to your pig than a feather...

we grow/cut and bale our own hay, and yes...sometimes things can 'appear' in the bales. its not something that can be helped unfortunatly (unless you have a field that is enclosed round all four sides with a roof on to stop things flying over...but yeah..thats near impossible!)

a lone feather is not gonna kill your piggy, just take the feather out and voila! now if there was a whole dead bird squished in the bale, that would be a reason to take the bale back and ask for another.....

Spishky said exactly what i was thinking...its a feather, nothing at all to worry about. There are more dangerous germs on your lawn than on one feather.

As she says, hay is laid to dry in fields, so short of covering the whole field or getting some poor person to go through every single bale, there isn't much else you can do.

I wouldn't worry about a feather. I've found a dead mouse twice now in hay - I know there's little farmers can do about it but it is really gross :)>>>

I have found far worse in straw bales and the hessian (large square) bales of hay, one feather is nothing to worry about, I have found a few small stones and clumps of dried mud in mine, I just remove the foreign bodies and feed as normal.

Machines pick up and bale the hay in fields, its impossible to keep this process sanitised, nature is as nature does.

Don't worrie about it...
I've found all manor of things in my hay...
Last week I found mummified wing of a bird....
Ewwwwwwwww.... Manky...
Hate to think who got the rest of it...!
I just chucked out that part of the bale and used the rest... My bales are 6ft long though... Chucked about 2 ft's worth out...
Because let's face it the rest wouldn't have been contaminated by it...
I've had crisp wrappers... Cans... Bottle lids... Rocks... And all sorts in my hay...
All good fun eh...?

i think the only thing i aint found in hay yet (or straw for that matter) is money...now that would be a find!

I found a five pound note once...!
I was doling out the hay to everyone and found this crumpled piece of paper and chucked it on the kitchen side...
Didn't think much of it... Went to clean my kitchen that night... And I was like omfg....!... It was slightly faded... Ever so slightly battered... But still a five quid note...!
Forgot about that untill you said...!... :))
Chuffed... :))

I remember you saying a while ago about that clown doll you once found - that still creeps me out when I think about it!

jesus sorry for trying to help, no need to get nasty. ill remember to keep my mouth shut next time. >:-(

As said, if it was more than a feather then it would be something to worry about, I found half a bird in a straw bale once, and another time a deer leg :)>>> - now these kind of things are important to notify and throw away the remaining bits but generally if its petshop hay then it has been through a process of bagging rather than the industrial scale baling where picking up bits of nasties is more probable.

I didnt read any reply as nasty, just that considering what can be found a feather is less worrying.

And for some reason during this whole thread I remember a story about somebody finding half a mouse in a loaf of bread :)>>>:)>>>:)>>> completely gross and off topic :red:)>>>:)>>>
