My lovely ginger guinea Jessica has been to vets today and had a very big lump removed from under her jaw/neck. I feel really bad as perhaps I should have noticed it before, I thought it was a type of dewlap (flabby skin) as it has always been there. Anyway it was a tumour and it was attached to nerves and lots of blood vessels. My lovely vet operated and removed it (it took three quarters of a hour to operate, a long time isn't it) and thankfully Jessica is now home. She is eating, drinking, peeing and pooing and moving about, so fingers crossed, toes as well she will be okay. Has anyone else had things happen to their guineas and thought that perhaps they should have noticed them sooner. Jessica is handled and stroked/cuddled every day, nails trimmed, brushed, ears cleaned and bathed so how on earth did I miss this.:(

Don't beat yourself up - lumps by the neck are not the easiest to see, as the skin is so loose around there; especially if it is a slow growing lump!

You did the best you could as soon as you noticed, and are caring for her to the best of your ability now.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a god recovery!

Its not your fault at all, as you say it was always there, so you have obviously been monitoring it for changes over time, which is what you are meant to do with lumps and bumps usually.

I know what you mean about feeling maybe you should have noticed sooner, I felt like that about my hamster which died of wet tail. After 3 days of acting strangelly but not having a dirty back end I'd been monitoring her, then when she did develop a dirty back end one evening I rushed her to an emergency late opening vet and she died in the waiting room, apparently as opposed to the common advice of if your hamster has a wet tail get to the vet, the wet tail is what happens in the latter end of the illness and is typically too late to save them hence if your hamster acts odd you dont wait to see if the wet tail develops to diagnose whats up with them, according to that vet.

Glad to hear Jessica is recovering after her op. Hope to see photos of your little princess soon.

I think everyone has times where they feel they should have spotted something sooner. Lumps on the jaw/neck area tend to be difficult to notice, especially if the pig has a particularly heavy dewlap.

I am glad the surgery went well, I do hope Jessica is continuing to recover quickly.

i havent had this experience but the way i see it you did notice in time as she is still alive, many GP owners may not notice until its to late and as we all know GP's hide illness so i think you did the best you could,I'm glad she is ok I'm crossing everything for her xxxxxxxxx

:)p Thanks everyone for your kind words. Jess is doing well, she is eating well and moving about. I have her indoors in a large cage, up until now on her own which she has never been used to so I think she may have been sulking:), so I have put Pepper, a elderly, "I can't be bothered to do anything other than lay in the sun" :))guinea in with her to keep her company until she can go back out in her usual hutch. She is going for a check tomorrow hopefully things should be okay, the wound looks fine so fingers crossed.
Here are 4 piccies of Jessica, she just lay there and let me take piccies, she is a darling:rose
