Laurie Drew Blood [Human] - Advice Please!

My sister (Tracy) is here with her friend (Nicki), and her friend brought her little niece (Paige).

Nicki is the friend who had guinea pigs, and she got rid of them (I do not know who they went to, unfortunately) - this caused Paige to be very upset.

So they wanted to let Paige see my piggies, Fry and Laurie. I asked them to wait a few minutes, because they were stuffing their faces due to a dish re-fill.

This caused Paige to throw a tantrum outside my bedroom. =/

So Tracy came up and I let her take the piggies (they had time to eat first) - and she took them downstairs.

A couple of minutes later - Tracy came back upstairs with them and apologised because there was blood on Laurie. I immediately thought that the piggies had fought, despite them never ever seriously doing so. (It's rare enough for them to have a moody scuffle.)

Then I saw her finger - covered in blood.

Laurie had bitten her, and there was blood around his mouth, and blood had dripped over his ear. I was shocked at just how much she was bleeding, it was much more than nip.

Laurie has nipped me a few times before, only lightly - I usually just verbally scold him, and he doesn't do it again. So this is so confusing to me right now.

I know she couldn't have provoked him - she's a pet fanatic like me, and keeps rats. Whenever she comes over, she takes the "guinea rats" to pet on her lap. I completely trust her with them.

So why Laurie would do that-.. I'm just in total shock right now.

I cleaned the blood off of him with wet tissue and he's in the cage with Fry, both acting completely normally.

My guess is that he was frightened for some reason. I think you need to ask the two people with the child what exactly happened.

I have only had one guinea pig that I re-homed badly bite someone, luckily this was a friends husband : and as they were also involved in animal welfare ....pretty tolerant and didn't make a big issue out of it. As it was really nasty bite, needing hospital treatment I obviously took the boar back and kept him. I couldn't risk re-homing him again. our guess was that he was posessive of his pen and cage mate, but, we'll never really know. He had no health problems.

Although he had never bitten previous to the incident, he did bite, or try... to my hubby and I many times following it. But we learned to "read" him and he lived here for another 5 years or so....little git that he was >
He wasn't an easy guinea to live with but I loved him and still miss him.

Chances are it may never happen again, but obviously don't let children or anyone unfamiliar with him, handle him

Edited to add: I once took in a boar that was going to be pts because he had "turned vicious" it turned out that he had a badly infected penis that needed treatment and he was obviously in tremendous pain when he was handled. There was another that I took in as he was biting and he had a piece of hay under his eye, between the lid and the conjunctiva. So...give him a good check over, just in case he might be having problems.

Well - Tracy didn't seem that bothered, and I spoke to my Mother about it - Laurie was just on her lap and she was holding him normally, and he decided to bite her finger.

It really is quite odd. D:

I'm the only one that seems worried about it, though. We're used to animals turning vicious in this house, I think, with the pets we've adopted. But this is very odd for young, generally happy little Laurie.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, it may never happen again, but it makes sense to be cautious around kiddies
As long as Laurie seems well in himself, just see how things go, he may have just nibbled a bit harder than he intended too and children do have very soft skin!

The first day i got Harry he did the same thing, i was knew and i had taken him from a environment he knew and scared him at first i was shocked but i forgave him in the end, i wouldnt worry you dont say if Lauri new your friend but if he didnt its likely that worried him and i no 2 of mine dont like young children so she might have scared him in some way but i wouldnt loose sleep over it

I just worry because he was with my adult sister the entire time, who he knows, in a familiar enviroment. :C

kids are very good at makin animals scared, they shout and they get all over excited. especially, if them, themselves, have not grew up with any pets or have not seen some in a while. Laurie is not like people, and doesn't think, oh its a kid, ill just ignore it until it goes. it probably seen paige's excitment threatening which caused her to lash out like she did. i would just give people warnings on how they pick up laurie and have a watchful eye when people do it, espcially kids first time i seen a hamster was wen i was 6. the only pets i had was a fish and a cat, so a rodent was a big suprise, i seen my friends ones too. my high pitched screams of 'awwww' and ' wow' scared it and i ended up going home with a blood stained t-shirt (i panicked and wiped the blood all over it) and 2 big bite holes in my finger.
