I read somewhere recently that lavendar was ok to feed guinea pigs. If this is true, how often can it be used and is it best fresh off the bush (stalks & flowers too) or dried?

I'm asking as I have a huge lavendar bush in the garden which is going to be uprooted soon and either moved elsewhere or used for the pigs if this is okay.

Thanks!

It is in the guide on what outdoor growing plants you can feed piggies. Curious too how much you could give.

Hmm. I thought I'd seen it in a guide but the outdoor growing plants link doesnt work for me.

Here is a link to a good list of safe garden and wild plants to feed: Guinea pigs: your day-to-day guide | Wood Green - The Animals Charity

I did find this though in the diet guide so I'm now a bit confused as elsewhere it says Lavendar is ok

Mediterranean herbs high in essential oils like thyme, sage, rosemary and lavender are not recommended as part of a regular diet. Please stick to fresh green soft-leaved herbs.

i'll do some more digging 👍

I've found a really interesting publication on lavender & piggies....what is the policy on posting external links?

I should imagine the key terminology there is "regular diet". I don't feed any of those herbs regularly but mine have all had thyme, sage and rosemary on occasion

So I will try them with a tiny bit & see if they like it. What I'm hearing from all I've read is that Lavendar as an occasional treat is perfectly fine (but not as part of a regular diet). Let's see if they like it now!

@YvonneBlue I've also got those herbs in my garden too so will add those to the treat list too 😊.

Thanks all for your input - very useful.

Mine enjoy lavender fresh off the plant once a week or so when I have it growing. As you have a huge plant I would be tempted to dry some as I wouldn't recommend feeding it all at once.

I think any of these herbs in moderation, Ted’s loves Rosemary, fennel and flat leaved parsley and thyme, hates coriander though 🤔
Thats funny- mine go nuts for coriander but they dont get it very often as I love it in curry! I potted some other herbs a couple of weeks back including parsley but last time I grew parsley it took ages to grow & was demolished within a few minutes - was hardly worth it 😂

I think as its such a well established plant I might try to rehome it elsewhere- seems a shame to cut it all down & like you say, it's nice to get clippings straight from the plant.

We grew some flat leaved parsley last year and one pot has actually survive the winter and is sending out new shoots. I thought it would be more tender. We have a big rosemary bush in the garden and fennel too. I love lavender but it’s so damp down here it doesn’t last for more than a season. We grow coriander which we love but neither Bill nor Ted would go near it, it’s like the devils food for them 😆
