Baby Rio is sporting a shaved tummy and 3 staples! - I was doing usual Sunday check and weigh and saw a 1 inch gash on his tummy wide open so you could see his stomach muscles- clean cut ( look like a knife wound) no blood ?
Inspection of cage found no sharp corners, inspection of the garden no sharp objects- a complete mystery.
He was happy in himself eating and running up and down stairs- me -yes I was a complete wreck!

Anyway- can't fault pets at home Vet who told me to bring him straight up even though they were full, and true to their word they took him in as soon as I got there ahead of 5 other people ! Luckily he didn't need aesthetic and I was able to pick him up 3 hours later and they only charged me £69
My usual vets informed me on the phone that they were full and to phone back later that afternoon to see if they could squeeze me in and that the cost would be an additional £100 for Sunday emergency! -

Rio is home now eating away , but with very sorry looking eyes- trouble is I can't pick him up for a big squeezy hug :(

Get well soon rio. And good on the pets at home vet. For making you priority.

Blimey, wonder what caused that. These things always happen on a bank holiday, I have a poorly one today too, luckily has not warranted a vet visit so far as is an ongoing issue. Glad the vet was able to see you as an emergency, Our local branch has just opened a vets and I would use them too in an emergency.

Still don't know what caused it, and it is so worrying as they have to go back in the cage , al though I have put the stairs up so they are confined to the top half to stop him running about - all I can think is that he caught it on the lip of the cage when he jumps out to go into garden
they are always gnawing at the would and it may have splintered? but where was all the blood? Needless to say my husband is in the garage constructing a ramp and stairs just in case.

I had a similar mysterious gash on one of my pigs, but on his back. Didn't need stitches , but did need antibiotics and plenty of tlc. Now you can't even see where it was.

Gosh - it just goes to show the importance of regular checks.
