I bought a large bale of hay from the farm I live next to. When I gave some to Nimbus and Nargle this afternoon I noticed a dried leaf mixed in with the hay. Obviously I took the leaf out and checked for more before I put it in their cage. I did find a couple more and removed them.

Is it normal to find leaves in hay or does it mean that this hay isn't suitable for them?

Sorry if this is a stupid question!

As hay is a natural product you can quite often find different things in it dependent upon the season and where it comes from. I always try and remove any leaves, thistles and large twigs that I notice when I am putting the hay into the cage. At least that way I know it isn't going to harm them. I find that meadow hay can have a lot more variation of what plants you tend to find in the bag compared to the likes of timothy hay which is just a specific grass hay.

So in answer to your question, yes the hay should be fine. You can continue as you are doing by removing the leaves if you are unsure, the likelihood is they probably unlikely to do any harm, if you were to miss any. I have missed thistles before and only found them later on, untouched so I just take them out later.

Thank you for your reply. I had a feeling it wouldn't be much of a problem but thought id better check anyway :)

Just watch out for twigs with thorns. I have found too many on occasion. They usually have a way of attacking you though before they get anyway near the cage lol.

Lol I'll keep my eye out for them, thanks for the heads up haha

we get the odd leaf and stick in our hay aswell. i just remove them before feeding the hay to the piggies. :)
