Hi, I am new to this site, but I wonderd, does anyone think it is suitable to leave their guinea pigs in their large pen all day? The cage my two guinea pigs are living in is big, but i want to extend it which i am hoping to do so soon, but i wondered if it would be ok to leave my guinea pigs in their run all day while I am at work, of course leaving hay, water food and beds, and toys in there? It's a large metal pen you usually get from pet shop.

thanks.

Just what i was about to ask. :)
I'm assuming inside, Absolutely fine, it's only the same as being in a C+C cage.

oh god yeah, my piggies live in doors, I couldn't put them outside. All my animals stay in doors, they are part of the family :) thanks for your replies, I think tomorrow I shall put them in their run until I sort out a bigger cage for them.

Just make sure you dont have a cat/dog that could lean into the run and you are fine O0

no I won't, the run is in the bedroom, so they have some peace and quiet from the dogs. I put them in there in the night and have a nice run round out of the way of the dogs.

Not if you've got a pig like mine who can escape Poppys escaped 2 times in the past week. ^-^ ^-^

oh dear, well i hope mine don't escape, though last weekend they did go in their run all day instead of being stuck in their cage, and thankfully they didn't escape :)

;D ;D They would be fine in your bedroom and would LOVE playing in their all day as long as their is water food etc ! O0 I leave mine outdoors sometimes for a few hours :)

I leave mine outdoors for a few hours if I am at home and in and out to check on them and can see them from the window. We have foxes round our way and I'm pretty sure a fox wouldn't take that long to dig into the run. I weight it down with large bricks so it can't be "nosed" up easily but I do worry about the digging . . .

Yours will love having more freedom indoors though :)

I would like to leave mine outdoors unsupervised, but there is a snake that lurks behind the garage at the bottom of the garden, so no chance!
REALLY - OMG how did that get there ? A wild one or a lost pet ? :D

Hi yes i do also check on mine all the time and sometimes sit in with them but i also have no room in my house for a run unfortunately :-\

We think its am adder or a grass snake, but its pretty big - I just saw its tail and pegged it, but OH said it was like 3 inner tubes from kitchen roll stuck together.
Nasty thing!

WHOAHHHH Id be scared too ;D

i think there is rats around our neighbourhood, though i have never seen them, i couldn't let them out the back anyway, too manys cats keeping going to the toilet in our garden and with our dogs going out there too. I remember when we used to have chickens, they had a really secure pen, but the fox had most of them :(

I haven't managed to find it again PP, although I have to admit I haven't looked too closely.
Apparently they are protected species (definately if it was an adder, not sure for grass snakes).

We have a fence all round the garden, but I also saw a falcon hovering overhead when one of the buns was out in the garden and the pigs were in their run, so I can't leave them unsupervised. The falcon wouldn't be able to get at the pigs but it might try and scare them.

A cat came nosing around the piggies in their outdoor run the other day - they were set up just outside the kitchen where I was cooking. We chased it off. It was a handy reminder to be vigilant.
