Leg injury

Metacam can be used for a lot longer than 3 days. I have a girl at the moment who has been on and off it for the last 3.5 years! You don't have to give probiotic with metacam x
I had my Rupert on and off metacam for months when his bladder issues were bad.
And Pedro then chinchilla has been on it almost every day since the end of October! And he's now 450g! It does seem to be gentle on them when they need it long term. And for most little beasties it's like a treat so not too stressful either!

My piggy George was on 1.5mg/ml metacam for dogs at 0.2ml daily. I split the dose so he had 0.1ml every 12 hours. Never had problems getting him to take it, he loved it and used to grab the syringe, pulling like mad.
I'm sure other members have more experience, but hope this helps.xx

Cat metacam at 0.5mg/ml is now licensed for use in piggies so that's what will be prescribed in the UK. I think you could discuss a higher dose with the vet, if he's still in pain, unless your piggy is a baby or has other health problems?
Healing wheeks, we have a hop-along piggy who arrived with a badly healed broken back leg we weren't told about, she does quite well now. Hopefully if there's no obvious break and with prompt vet care your piggy will be fine!

Thanks piggiepuggle. I think he is not in as much pain now. There are no broken bones so we are looking at soft tissue / maybe ligament damage. He is only 5mths old so I am hoping for a full recovery. x

Texas, US. Vet said she was doing fine. She may never use the leg the same way again, but it doesn't seem to hurt her or impede her motion.
Hi Laureen, I’m in the UK Northwest. I’m glad your piggie is doing well. Let’s hope for the best! We are only 4 days post injury so will see how he is in a few weeks time!

Looking ahead, do you have soft flooring in your cage like vetbed or vetfleece or a padded fleece liner? That can make it much more comfortable for a hop-along piggy to get mobile again, and start exercising their injured leg without pain...

Thanks Piggiepuggle. We use fleece with liners at the moment. We have recently bought a stacked 2x5 c&c and have been looking for liners. Maybe now is the time!

The most padded fleece liner we have is from Pampered Piggies, its almost like a duvet! Definitely the favourite with limpy big pig Clover, she can gallop about on that one without limping at all :)

Sounds perfect! Thank you. Will look at those for sure. Limpy big pig Clover sounds like she is doing just fine! 😁

Thanks for asking VickiA. 😀Beanie is much happier and weight bearing on the injured leg. He’s moving around less awkwardly but not fully recovered. We still have him confined to smaller c&c. It will be 2 weeks on Sunday since the accident. We are still giving metacam but wonder whether we need to now. Back to the vets on the 25th. I really hope he makes a full recovery.

Good to hear he is weight bearing and moving around better.
You could try reducing the metacam dose slightly and see if he stops moving around as much or if anything changes. Or you could call and ask the vets about reducing the dosage.

Once our limpy pig Clover started moving around more our vet suggested reducing the metacam by 0.05ml per day to see how it went... so she started off on 0.25mls of dog metacam then went down to 0.2, 0.15, 0.1, 0.05, then she was ok. She still has pain relief occassionally (cat loxicom now it is licensed for piggies!) if she strains her leg or looks a bit stiff in cold weather and starts limping again. Glad your limpy pig is improving!

Great to hear Beanie is feeling better and fingers crossed he will be back to popcorning soon.
Hugs.xx

Beanie went back to see the vet today after 3 weeks cage rest. She says he’s making good progress- weight bearing etc well but knee joint still feels a bit swollen. She said something about the growth plate being dislodged which was worrying and potential for arthritis.... two more weeks in confinement and then take from there...stop metacam, which we already had. Wish I could post my video of him .....you would never know!
