hello

I have read in a few books that Lettuce is a no no as it contains some form of sedative that makes your piggies sleepy... is this all lettuce? i believe that the darker varieties are ok in small amounts.. but Iceberg is a definate no no... :smiley6600: :-\

I think it's about more than that, also there is the fact that there ins't a lot of nutirtion in lettuce, it is mostly water and 'per nibble' it doesn't give a good amount of nutritional benefit in comparison to other foods like darker greens and hay. There is also little fibre in it, and as we know guineas need lots of fibre. I thought I'd also heard somewhere that it could give guineas loose poos....I might be wrong on that though ?

Yep it can give loose poops too. Everything in moderation. My vet says lettuce is like chocolate for us. I do feed Romaine, curly and round lettuce my lot get 2 servings a week. :) 2 leafs per pig.

hi i am confused too as to wether guinea pigs can or cannott eat lettuce i sometimes give mine a leaf or two of little gem lettuce i know iceberg is a definite no no

Mine only get lettuce when my mum has some left over from their house as you can't give them a lot - it doesn't have nutritional value (like cucumber) but they love the taste of it.

thanks for your replies! i think the dark green varieties are ok... will steer away from iceberg/gems... x x
