So hey everyone! I must have signed up to this a long time ago as I went to register and my email was already in use,,,, I should really use it more for more Piggy chat! :)

So something MAJOR is going on with my Guinea Pig Ollie, well we know what it is but not honestly not the specifics as that would require further tests which I don't think the vet thinks are worth it. ( Male - 6 Years Old (4th - July 2012) - No previous health concerns - Breed: Coronet.
SUMMER: Oliver had a great summer out playing enjoying the sunshine all day every day! He was spritely, his usual weight and I had no concerns.
SEPTEMBER: Oliver started to eat less and less of his dry food which he always devoured in one sitting and became very picky with vegetables he'd usually always eat. I became most concerned when I say him become overly lethargic.
....So Ollie had a comprehensive blood test last Wednesday. The results came in on Monday. He has Leukemia and kidney failure( plus high calcium & mild-moderate anemia ( further tests would be able to tell me what type of leukemia & then also the type of anemia). That day he had Subcutaneous fluids injected to (try) and help the hypercalcemia and a b12 shot to (try) to improve energy levels. I was sent home with a gut antacid(twice daily) and told to give Oliie as much water as possible to help the hypercalcemia and of course to try and get as much food syringed into him as possible. TODAY: Ollie is much the same as he has been, well his poo's have improved slightly now that I have him on a better probiotic, he is not dehydrated, he is cleaning himself, he will walk around for 5 minutes at a time and then take a long break to snooze (the lethargy is REAL), he is peeing a lot from all the water I am getting into him, temperature, unfortunately I do not know, I must buy one asap, but he is in a nice heated bedroom, sometimes too warm for me & I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS, he ate half a baby corn earlier today, I know you probably will giggle but because he hasn't ate in over a week by himself you could say I was floored, His chew obviously wasn't as strong so eating this piece of food took him longer but wow oh wow he put all of his energy into it! - It made my day!
B12 Shot: I rang on Tuesday and asked if I could give Ollie some of my methylcobalamin b12, which I was told would be useless...maybe so! but most importantly that he wouldn't need it as the shot he was given is intended to last a week! I know excess b12 can just be peed out but because of his kidney status I figured an overload would do no good either and I don't want to add to his current ailments.

My questions are (1) Do you think he needs more veterinary care, i.e medication & or procedures or maybe even a second opinion. Was sending me home with a gut stimulant enough.
Do you think if I flushed out all of that calcium his kidneys could repair themselves...I know regeneration of the kidneys is not always possible ->>> resulting in Ollie being able to get any possible treatment for his Leukemia...or even let us investigate further what kind of leukemia it is and then go from there.

Thank you for reading, I know some of you will understand the constant thoughts & ideas that come to our minds when we are told that our little one's are very poorly and may have limited time left with us, I guess we just want to know if we are doing everything in our power for a precious Cavies!

( P.S - WAITING ON THE BLOOD TEST RESULTS TO BE SENT TO ME SO I CAN GATHER MORE INFORMATION )

I’m sorry that the diagnosis isn’t what you expected. Leukaemia is rarely diagnosed in piggies so I’m not sure what experience we may have on the forum to assist. But we can offer support to you at this difficult time.

@Steff_Loren_B Gosh, I'm so sorry but I don't have any experience with leukaemia either.

But if you have the time and money then a second opinion won't harm. My avatar pig was written off by an exotics vet when he had multiple bladder stones but I asked around and had him seen by another vet and he lived another 2 years stone free. Well worth it, and now I have a new better vet for life!

It's hard when we have a poorly piggie especially a seriously one. I'm sorry you have and i wish you all the best as you try to help your loved piggie.
You may know I have a very poorly piggie Cocoa and it took me 4 lots vets and several expensive tests to get to the bottom of why she was ill.
Knowing she has a Uniquely rare cancer Epitheliotrophic Lymphoma means we deal each day on its merit. I know she's very poorly and I'm not going to tell Cocoa.
I hope small insight helps.
Dave and Cocoa.

I'm sorry for your little ones diagnosis. Unfortunately what your little piggie has is terminal. There isn't much that can really be done at this stage apart from keeping him going and keeping him comfortable. These types of illness is all about keepi them comfortable and it's all about quality over quantity of life. I would look at giving him some pain relief such as gabapentin, just to cover any discomfort or arthritis. Sounds like your doing fabulously with him! Thinking of you both.
