So they've got Lice for the 3rd time. In so confused as to how and why they keep getting them. I've had them to the vets previously and used a stop on type treatment and the the second time injections. What other methods are there? I hate all the chemicals

How long were they treated for and what were they given? Is it definitely lice?

I don't really have any experience with lice, other than the last boar I adopted came with them so I had to continue the treatment.

The injections were like fortnightly was over a 6 week period I think or maybe 8 week..yes it's 100 percent lice it's driving me mad I've had them nearly a year and been battling these since I got them

Are you able to bath them in an appropriate shampoo,?(flea or die, lice and easy from gorgoeus guineas)are what ive used in the past.Maybe ask your vet for advise, you need to bath all of them at weekly intervals for three weeks, otherwise the eggs will keep hatching.maybe ensure deep clean living environment with F10.I hope you get to eradicate them.It is very difficult and i feel for you and your piggies.x

The vets never mentioned a shampoo? Where can I get one from? Do I need to go back to the vets for more treatment then or will shampoo kill the lice?

With persistent lice (and some can unfortunately be very persistent and a real pain to get rid of), a two pronged approach of a full 3 rounds course of ivermectin and lice'n'easy shampoo from Gorgeous Guineas may do the trick. Please be aware that you need to wait 2 days between any skin application before you can do another one.

If that still doesn't work, I would ask my vet about a course of stronghold; that is quite a strong product, so something to consider if everything else fails. It has done the trick with Nye's fur/hay mites.

A deep clean with F10 etc. can hopefully also help to get rid of them.

I've ordered the lice n easy. Got to order some xeno 450 and the F10. Luckily I have a large outdoor hutch then a smaller hutch in the run. So I am going to for now keep them in the smaller hutch in the run whilst I disinfect their larger one and then once the treatment arrives can move them back into their bigger one. Just glad the weathers warmer so they can be in the smaller hutch and run x

Ahh HELP! Right so ordered the lice n easy and it's arrived so has the F10 and so has xeno450... my scales are playing up and giving me random weights for the pigs worried the xeno450 is too strong for my smaller pig,so going to have to wait till tomorrow and borrow my Mum's scales either that or a trip to the vet get them weighed and if the 450 is too much for the smaller pig fork out there and then for the other Xeno.. I HATE the amount of that stuff I have to put on him though its rediculous! Anyway they are in their temporary hutch their main hutch has been clean and empty for a good 5 days I've just blasted it with F10 and leaving to air dry I WONT be putting them back in there until they've atleast had one course of their spot on then it will be aa case of F10 weekly and I can do the same with the temporary hutch will this work?.. my bigger pig is Covered in lice now though and was wondering if a bathe in liceNeasy would help give him some relief or if there is even any point if he's going back into a hutch that's no doubt also crawling with them. He is a VERY skittish pig and a bath I'm sure is just going to unsettle him something rotten.. I am so confused as to how the lice have come back.. They were clear of lice and eggs the vet said last time. This is so stressful been battling them for a year now never known other people with guinea pigs have this problem! TIA for any hepful tips or advicexx

You can treat with lice'n'easy first to try and physically remove as many lice as possible. You have then got to wait 2 days until you can treat with xeno (which always requires that you wait 2 days after application to the skin until it is fully absorbed before you can bathe again).

I would wait with moving them back in once you have got on top of the lice, which will likely take more than just one round. A full course of ivermectin takes a minimum of 3 rounds, applied at the interval specified on the packing.
Please also follow the recommendations for the use of your shampoo.

If this doesn't work, please ask your vet for a course of stronghold as the last resort. lice can in some cases really difficult to shift. Hopefully you can get rid of them with the ivermectin and an lice'n'easy.

Okey doke thanks Wiebeke I've got work tomorrow just going to get to the vets tomorrow and get them weighed hopefully in the afternoon if no appointments I'll just use my mums old school scales. I'm so stressed out with it. I've been on top of these lice twice before they just keep coming back will try this then as you say give the strong hold a go. Just feel so bad on the pigs must be awful for them. Luckily the weather's been good enough for them to have free roam in the run all day so they aren't minding too much about being in the smaller temporary run but it isn't the ideal situation.. sorry for the long winded messages x

I believe lice can come from hay or bedding? If it's not vacuum packed, for example if you get it from a farm or something? Maybe that's where they came from? :)

I agree, thankfully not lice but have had little tiny flies in a package of hay (from B&M) last summer spread everywhere and took so long to get rid of

Weighed them and they were the right weight for the 450 thank the Lord! It doesn't say though when to reapply can anyone tell me is it a week or 2? Going to give them a nice liceneasy bath on Thursday or Friday feeling better about it all now they've had their first dose :)

I used ivermectin drops one week apart previously but I think I found the lice fairly early on in the infestation as Jemima had predominantly black hair which made them stand out (urgs the thought of them makes me itch!). I think minimum one week apart is needed for a bad infestation
