ok, so i have noticed when i have held the pigs the last couple of times, i amm being bitten on thetops of my legs, where they sit. we do have dogs and cats, but they are done very regularly with spot on treatment. what can this be?

I really dont know but would be interested in the answer!

no i dont have an allergy, as i have been tested for anmal allergies after having a reaction to something, no these itch , and are like spots.

Is it just on your legs? You don't get it on your hands or arms?

I think if the piggies had lice then your arms and hands would be itchy too. Could it be heat rash?

I get spots on my legs after cuddles with my dog (hes like a living hot water bottle) The spots scratch like mad!

i dont know if it could be heat rash, but i would guess no, i have combed the cats tonight and examined the fur in the comb, no flea dirt or anything, think i will not hold the piggies until it has gone then try again and see if it happens again thanks for your help x

What spot on treatment do you use on the dogs and cats? Some are more effective than others.

As for lice biting - it depends on the type of louse really. You should be able to see lice on your piggy if they have them.

Another thought - could it be a reaction to their hay where they've been in contact with it?

I react when they sit on their hay then sit on me! (I am allergic to the furry little monsters themselves anyway!). It affects me worst on the areas of "thin" skin, like neck, face, insides of arms, legs etc.

i use frontline for the cats, and advocate on our dog, three of our piggies have been on ivermectin, as one of our rescues had lice before we got him, he was healed by the time we had him, his partner was also treated as a matter of course, and one of ours recently had them, so really they should be clear, no signs of anything on them, but some you cant see can you? i think you could be right, it could be the hay! oh well never mind!

Could well be the frontline, it's not very effective any more. Also cats are so clean you rarely see evidence of fleas on them unless it's a particularly bad infestation. It's unlikely to be fleas from holding the pigs though. Do they look like hives?

no they dont look like hives, look like flea bites! so perhaps it is the fronline, as i know fleas become immune, oh rats, will have to look into alternative flea treament, thanks for your help x

dont use frontline on guinea pigs its toxic you need xenex for lice and ivermectin for mites, if they have mites the ones that look like little flakes of dandruff then this is called walking dandruff and yes these can bite us humans and infect your home and other animals, to get rid of these you need to use ivermectin 3 doses 7 days a part x

This is how guinea pig lice look. You can see lice crawling through your piggies fur if your guinea pigs have them.

If you can't see any, then your guinea pigs obviously don't have lice and you need to look for other things that could cause your spots. Lice are species specific and don't usually leave their host, so for you to have as many spots, they would have to be crawling with them!

i know what i will be doing this eve! as i said previously, three out of five piggies have been treated with ivermectin recently, i am sure they have nt got mites, but will check this eve, i would never use frontline on the piggies, , have sprayed the carpets and soft furnishings with skoosh a product i brought from the vet, contains no insecticide, i did nt do the room where piggies are, cats or dog dont go in there.
