I was holding one of my guinea pigs this morning and as I looked through her fur, she has like long White things crawling around her fur they are mainly behind her ears, she hasn't got like loads!
Do I take her to a vet!?

Hi

You will need to get some anti mite shampoo for her, I use Flea or Die but there are others.

The imortant thing is that you have to bathe her every 7 days for 3 weeks (thats 3 shampoos) to break the breading cycle as the shampoo only kills the living mites not any eggs.

Hi Rachael, how old is your guinea? I agree with your thoughts on what the problem is, it does sound like lice.

Whichever shampoo you choose to treat with, it will need to soak in for a certain amount of time at each of the weekly baths. I tend to give a thorough wash and rinse before lathering up the pig a second time and letting it soak in.

FleaorDie is usually left on for 10 minutes and then rinsed, while Lice n Easy (from www.gorgeousguineas.com) is left on for 5 minutes then rinsed. I have no experience of using other anti-parasitic shampoos, although I know there are others.

I have 2 guinea pigs, they are only 4 months old!
Okayy, could I get the treatment from Pets @ Home!?
I don't think my guinea pigs would let me wash them as they are very timed but I will deffo try doing it (:

I think Pets @ Home do a mite shampoo but I have never used it so cannot coment on how good or bad it is, they also do a mite powder that you dust on them like talk, but again I have no coments on how good it is or bad.

Re shampooing them you might find they enjoy the bath

That is one chilled piggie! I didnt realise you could use baby shampoo.

I wanted to ask, can we catch the lice off the pigs?

Hi

As we all bathe our piggies every month like we should Right :x the question must be what shampoo do I use?

What we should all be doing is checking the skin every month.

Once this has been done you can then make the best choice for what shampoo regime is needed that month

Is there any wild life present then use an anti-mite shampoo

Is there any signs of flaky skin then use an Anti-Fungal shampoo

If every thing is fine then use baby shampoo.

Well thats the way I do it.

The best way I have found to check the skin and hair is through a microscope and these can be bought quite inexpensively these days from eBay.

I would be careful with generic antiparasitic shampoos; they can contain pesticides that may harm your guinea pigs.

Here is more about lice:
http://www.guinealynx.info/lice.html

http://www.gorgeousguineas.com have shampoos that are specially formulated for the skin ph of guinea pigs. Especially if you are planning to bathe your piggies as often as every month you might want to prefer to use shampoos that will be easy on guinea pig skin. I would recommend bathing less often, unless it is medically necessary.

Here is more info on bathing:

I used johnsons mite shampoo followed by johnsons insecticidal spray, It worked a treat for all mine and cost less then £10 for both from p@h :)
