I have just recently moved my guinea pigs and a hamster into my spare bedroom......the question is, do you leave a light on for them or not? They used to live in the livingroom so there was always a light on when it was dark apart from when I went to bed.

I have been leaving a wee lamp on for them (it gets turned off when I go to bed) but I just wondered what other people did.

It's personal choice, pigs seem to do fine with either. Mine have a light on as they are in my room and I have a nightlight on all night.

I put a light on for mine for about 2 / 3 hours after dark. Then its lights out to allow the natural morning light to appear. I think its better that way.

Also, a friend told me that leaving a light all night long on is cruel because it causes stress which leads to deseases and early death (I don`t know if this is true).

Also, energy saving fluescent lights might harm pigs because of the pulsating light rays. Some humans get headaches from these lights while at work in an office. Perhaps it gives piggies a headache too?

Anyway, it think let nature do the lighting for us, it more natural and anyway, piggies become come active at dusk and dawn as most animals do in the wild.

Anders,

the way i see it piggies are most comforted by what they have loved for so many years and thats darkness, the light in my GP room stays off all night except for when i go in for piggy cuddles/veg/food/water/hay,during the day i let a little light in with the blinds but they seem much happier if the room is dark;)

Thanks for your replies. I never intended on leaving the light on all night, it was just as long as I was up, should they have a light on too.

They've got my bedside lamp at the minute as I don't want to leave the big light on for them - it's a bit bright! I'll put it on when it's getting dark and then turn it off when it's bedtime.

As much as I love them - it is so nice to have my living/diningroom back to myself. Even the cats have taken to going in the spare bedroom all the time now for a nap.

hi, my piggies live outside. In a shed in winter and outside in summer. I have a light in my shed but i only use it when i'm in there. By day it has natural light through the windows. So, when it's dark they're in the dark. So i think if i did keep them inside which i have occasionally for a poorly piggy then i'd do the same. It's how they'd be in the wild, and it's always been fine for me. :)

My rabbit, guinea pig and gerbil are all in the spare room and I put the light on when it gets dark and then that goes off when I go to bed or before if it is really late. However I really think my piggy who has ruby eyes prefers it with the light off but if it is on he goes into his piggy igloo and watches out from there lol.

Joy xx
