Hi

I think my lilac guinea pig is deaf. I have 8 pigs in the front room and when I hoover the others run around like it's a zombie apocalypse, but she just carries on munching! Has anyone heard if this is common?

Thanks

Vicky

Occasional deafness and/or blindness happens. You can check by sitting him on your lap face towards you and then clap sharply behind his back where he can't see. Similarly you can check for sight.

Is it just with the hoover or in other situations, too? Some piggies are much less bothered by noises, especially when they are totally absorbed in eating.

I've just tried that. Nothing.....blank look :( I think she must be deaf. On the plus side she seems to be able to see and follow my finger so that's good :)

She can still lead a perfectly normal, happy life and has most likely learned to compensate with her other senses. ;)

Yeah I guess so. I guess being deaf is better than blind. I've just thought she's always last down for veges too. She only comes down from the loft when she feels me banging her c&c cage open. Hey ho that's life I guess :)

They don't worry about these things like we do so she will just carry on regardless :) She will learn to follow her buddies and if you bang the cage or stamp your foot you will get her attention as she will feel the vibration.

One of my boys has limited hearing and was pretty confused with all the fireworks going off at the weekend. They were so sharp and loud noises that even he heard them and he wondered what the hell was going on!
