My lil man isnt well. I dont know if its that thing called impaction. I saw a little bit of poo poking out his bum and as it was a diff shape it made me want to look (it looked like a food pelet). I gently pushed his skin back to have a look and a huge (really huge) peice of poo was there. Ive tried getting it off but its stuck and there some discharge aswel :( my poor lil man. The peice kind of pops back in when you let go but you ccan feel it under the skin. Its hard to explain. His still pooing though so i dont understand whats going on. When i try and get it off his crying at me so ive given up, i dont want to hurt him. So his off to the vets a half 3. really hope he will be ok :...

Poor wee lincoln. One of my piggies gets this quite a lot. I usually use vaseline on a cotton bud to loosen the mass. It doesnt come away right away but with a bit of work I can normally remove the mass. Your vet should be able to talk you through how to deal with this. Its not for the faint stomached! Good luck to Lincoln.

thanks. Just got back. His impacted and has a yeast infection. his got cream and antibiotics and ive got to clean him everyday. poor lil man his not happy at all. Just gave him his meds and put him back with some veg x

Poor lincoln. At least you know what it is now. Not the most pleasant of tasks but a vital one to an impacted piggy. My boar with the impaction problems just seems to accept it now when I wrap him up and clear out his rear end. Just as well piggies are so good natured. They must wonder what we are doing to them when we go poking and proding at their bums!

My piggie Mimsi (boar) has very loose bum muscles hence his impaction problems. He has had this since I got him. I'm not sure if impaction is a reoccurring problem in general. None of my other piggies have had impaction just poor Mimsi. Mimsi also has a bladder stone which the vet thinks he has had for years, but it is embedded in the bladder wall so the specialist I saw said that as it is causing him no other problems, best to leave alone. Mimsi is four so surgery would be risky. Poor wee man. Despite all that he is a very happy piggy and has two girlfriends in the cage next to him who he kisses through the bars!

i think it's normally a regular occurance, just keep checking chez! will you bring him tomorrow chez? or will you bring someone else instead?

I've had 2 boars who were impacted & did see a slight improvement after giving them probiotic :)

How old is Lincoln Chez?

A tip for you when cleaning his sack out - do it under water :) helps make it easier and also stops you loosing the hair from your nostrils with the smell lol!

I usually submerse my boar in water with his back against the edge of the sink and me supporting him - I then gently roll everything open and clean it out. As long as he's comfy enough, he shouldn't wriggle too much :)

thanks Beks thats really helpful, ive been finding it really hard and i can see in his face his uncomftable and it makes me feel so sad. Ive cleaned him out today under salt water (as told by the vet) and used a cotton bud, the smell is horrible :(. Putting the cream on is easy. What I'm also finding hard is givin him his antibiotics with a syringe. he pulls his head away and i cant stop his as my other hand is holding his body :( most is going on his face rather than in his mouth. His about 1 year and 7 months old. Why do they get impaction? Is it something I'm doing wrong?

thanks x

I don not think that you are doing anything wrong Chez. I think impaction is just something that boars can get x

he seems a little young for it but it's a usual condition for older boar. It may clear after the yeast infection has but will recur.
Peter Gurney (I think) recommends feeding back the 'vita-poo' to the pig as they usually eat it to keep their gut healthy. Obviously, not if he's got an infection. We do it with Bertie. He wolves it down usually with half my finger... He just has 'sh**y' breath afterwards, that's all. I agree the smell is pretty rank but it's a small thing to do for the love we get in return...

Impaction usually occurs in older boars when the muscles loosen but you may find it's just down to his infection and will clear. Even if it doesn't it's easy to manage don't worry too much.

If he fights you for a/bs, either towel wrap him or sit him on your lap, his bum into your 'groin' and that way he can't back away/move as freely. DId the vet recommend you giving him daktarin orally also? it will help :)

whats daktarin rolleyes?

Sorry I missed this thread earlier Chez. Impaction is a yucky thing for us humans to work with (I find the smell gets under my fingernails, and takes a day to get rid of!) but as far as the piggies go, it's not too much of an issue.

Daktarin Oral Gel is an over the counter med for human babies with oral thrush. Since Lincoln has to eat his poops at some stage, and he has a yeast infection, there's a chance that it may transfer to his mouth. Daktarin Oral Gel will just help with preventing him getting oral thrush and can mantain general oral health while he does have the yeast problem.

i was given some cream from the vets which I'm using. he has loads of normal poos so i wont feed him his impaced stuff as he has plently of normal poos. she wants to see him again in a week. his feeling sorry for himself and went to sleep on me today gently moaning. He doesnt understand why his mommy is doing what shes doing :(

Daktarin Oral Gel is for any age, not specifically babies. Most pigs seem to like the flavour!

Oh Chez sweetie i've just seen this thread, poor little Linc :(
My boys only got it when they were older..........poor man that rotten infection must be really upseting his tummy grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Look it's most unpleasant but once her realises that it helps i'm sure he'll forgive you love.
I found a gentle manipulation helped and a little treat of parsley whilst doing it so it kept mind off the yukky process i was doing to the butt area :{
And i totally agree with the Daktarin it's wonderful stuff !
Heaps of healing wheeeeeeks and loves from me xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
