Hi,

I've read on here that some of you have litter trays underneath your hay racks as the piggies will often wee and poo whilst eating hay (multi-tasking!). What do you put in the litter tray, cat litter?

I'm planning on using puppy pads and fleece in the cage, wondered whether to use cat litter (wasn't sure if it was toxic to piggies?) or to cut up pads and fleece to make a small lined litter tray?

Hello,

I like to use guinea pig litter because it is specially for the pigs. It can cost more than $8 a bag though so it can be expensive but look for coupons and specials! I know some bags are cheaper though but the one I buy is scented so mine may cost more because of that. I know in my area one of my pet stores is having a litter and food sale buy one large bag get a small bag free! I think it is well worth the money. One other tip. I see some people do this and it is not healthy. Do not clean their cage less to save money. You will actually spend more money getting a vet because of the health problems that could come with it than just cleaning your cage regularly. I don't think you would ever do this but I like to let people know :) Hope this helped!

We use recycled paper litter for our pets. I find it's really good as it won't hurt them even if they eat the pellets, like some greedy piggies will try! They are highly absorbent and dust-free.

One thing to point out is with cat litter make sure it's not the clumping stuff, that clumps when wet as this can cause problems when it's in the piggies stomach if they eat it.

Some good ideas are wood pellet litter, megazorb or dust extracted sawdust ! Sometimes just newspaper and a small layer of hay can work too (:

I use puppy pads and fleece make sure the cage sides go over the fleece otherwise you have guinea pigs under the fleece and pigs eating puppy pads! I then just use a cat litter tray with megazorb and hay on top!

I've used Bio-catolet which is also suitable for small animals, and mine got on well with that. It's recycled paper and isn't dusty. I tried wood shavings, but found it too dusty.

The only other guinea pig specific litter I've seen in the UK is Critter Litter. It's really expensive, and my piggies were already semi trained when I tried it and they refused to use it. It's a hard clay litter in small marble-like pellets, so I suspect it was uncomfortable for them to sit on.

Great thanks everyone, I may try the cheap option (")) and go for newspaper and hay to start, but move on to megazorb or something similar if we don't get on well with it.

Asda do a really cheap bag of wood based cat litter which I use, its great, really absorbent and easy to clean out and doesnt smell of anything (I dont like the smell of megasorb) :)
