My lot prefer picture 1 with a much bigger hay pile. The hay box or any box for that matter would get launched. I regularly find them standing upright or half in, half out of the cage. Does make me think that they were cats in their past lives...

Our 2 like a large box on its side full of hay.
I usually line it with newspaper & it lasts a few days in the play pen.
Means I don’t have to cut doors out too!
