Hi, yesterday we sadly lost our beloved Louie. His brother George is fine at the moment but I was wondering what signs I need to look out for that will show me he is depressed. I know they don't like to be solitary but he's a very dominant pig and is 3 years old. I have the option of sending him to live on the local school Farm surrounded by other happy piggies.

We are very sorry to hear of your sad loss. All our hearts go out to you at this sad time. Lets hope it doesn't happen, but if George does start to get depressed, he most likely will lose his appetite and sit and mope. He may not be as energetic as before and will just sit in one spot for most of the time. Perhaps you could get him a much younger male companion? He will not see a baby pig as so much of a competitor, so should not display too much dominant behaviour.

Hi welcome to the forum..

Sorry to hear of the passing of Louie, you are more than welcome to post a tribute to him in our "Rainbow Bridge section"

Have a look at this thread - http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/looking-after-a-bereaved-piggy.109674

We would also recommend the you look into the possibility of taking George "Boar Dating" at a reputable rescue a link which can be found here - http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-rescue-locator/ also the forum can give you links to rescues in other countries too.. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-rescue-locator/
That said can you please add your location to your profile as it helps fellow members give any answers to questions you may have that may be area/country specific. This can be done by clicking on your username, then personal details, then add location......

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have and again sorry to hear of your loss..

Lisa & Ali..

I'm very sorry for your loss of Louie.
George can still be as happy if you take him boar dating, this way he can bring home a friend he gets on with.
I wouldn't suggest taking him to a farm, you are best to bring him a friend home.

Thank you, the help and support on this site is amazing. I joined when I first got my piggies a few years ago but forgot all about it and due to a change of email address I was unable to reset my password.

Thank you for your kind words and advice.

Sam

Sweet dreams Louie - I have just introduced a baby boar (6weeks old) to my lonely boar and I now have a happy pair - goodluck with whatever you choose to do

Hi! I am very sorry for your loss! You are welcome to post a tribute to Louie in our Rainbow Bridge section whenever it feels right for you.

@lisaali has already given you our tips for what you can do for a bereaved piggy. How much and how long for they grieve can vary a lot individually. We have got a rescue locator on the top bar, but may be able to give you contacts for good standard piggy savvy rescues in other countries as well.

With members from all over the world, it is very helpful for us to be able to always give you the appropriate recommendations straight away if you please added your country, state or (for the UK) your county/city to your details, which you can find in when you click on your username on the top bar/personal details/location. Thanks!

So sorry for your loss. Hope that you can find George a suitable companion in time x
