Long Haired Piggys

Its up to you really. If you feel that you have the time to brush them everyday and give them regular baths then you can keep it long, but if you dont then I would say cut it short, my GP is a peruvian cross and only grows long hair at the back, and although it looks very nice it does get into a bit of a state so I tend to cut it and keep it short. As for keeping white fur white especially if its long I dont think you can stop it from staining yellow,a all I would advise is to clean out regularly and if they do theyre business in 1 particular corner to clean that bit out every day. Hope that helps :)

Thank you, Corly is long haired all over, and it's only his belly that goes yellow which is short hair! >.< I trim his back end but no the top as I like him to have some warmth. He used to be really clean but for some reason the pas tmonth his belly seems moist and yellow most days and I don't want to over wash him. Once a month max.

Sorry just re read your post. I always put my finger between the guinea pigs skin and scissors as to avoid accidentally cutting him, or try using a comb as a guard between the skin and scissors as that works well too, and just try to make it look as neat as you can, you'll learn with time :)

How old is your GP? If hes gettin on it could be that hes gettin a little incontinent and so is peeing everywhere so tends to be wet alot underneath maybe. Have you checked his teeth too as if theyre too long he might not be able to clean him self. I would say that if it carrys on ask your local vet for advise maybe.

I agree that it's a good idea to get the vet to check him over.

I've never managed to keep one of my long haired guinea pigs long haired. What usually happens is they get really unhappy about being combed. They also generally seem happier with their bad haircuts, particularly in summer.

mine wriggles a lot so it takes two to cut the hair, one to hold it and one cut.

Terry is a sheltie cross so I just trim the hair before it meets the ground, keeps it tidied/cleaner :)

one of our guinea pigs is suppose to be short haired but he has this one section that gets long and i just take the clippers and run it accross there he doesn't mind and it keeps it short and trimmed!

My long haired lad is a nightmare, its not unknown to get bitten when he's been groomed so I tend just to keep an eye on him, bath him every three months and cut tats out as they occur he had a bed to lie on to try and wick away the urine.

I used to need another pair of hands to do any haircuts, but I have five long haired pigs now and am well used to doing them on my own. I use electric clippers - used to use scissors but I get on much better and much quicker with clippers.

I tend not to shear them all over, I bring their hair to just above floor level/around the pigs belly level, like a bob, the hair is still long but not trailing and tangling. I make sure I get the long bits around the legs and genitals. In summer I thin the hair out and this year did a more radical trim, but I found the thickest part of the hair is around the sides of the belly, just going towards the underside.
