I hope I'm posting this in the right section, apologies if not.

Fudge is about 3 months old and has very dark long nails. How long should nails be? I know piggies have quite long nails but his are quite long and I don't know if they need clipping, however, I read somewhere that nails shouldn't need cutting in a pig so young. Has anyone got piccies of 'normal' length nails so I can compare. I'm new to keeping a guinea pig and want to get it right before I start adding to my 'herd' of one! He's on vet bed so doesn't wear them down naturally.

There are pictures of Wilson in the "New Piggie" thread in the photo gallery where I think you can see his nails which were clipped on Tuesday morning.

3 months is not especially early to have to clip claws - especially as he is on vet bed as there will be no natural wear and tear.

Black nails are the hardest to clip but I would recommend just taking a tiny bit off for a couple of days in a row until you get used to doing it. Each time a claw is clipped the quick (blood vessel) receeds a bit anyway so it will make it easier to clip. I also prefer human toe nail clippers to any animal claw clippers I have ever tried for piggie claws. Just pop the nail in and squeeze a tiny bit - if you are too close to the quick they will squeak! Then adjust as needed and snip!

its a bit easier if you can have someone shine a light under the nails or if you can find some natural light and that way you can see the quick. Good luck!
