hi,

I'm new to the forum so "hello" :)p

I've currently got two 7 month old guinea pigs and i'm getting 3 new 7 week old ones on Sunday. Should I be feeding or doing anything different with them?

Thanks :)

The only things do is Weigh them weekly(but this applys to all piggies) To make sure they are growing up ok. :)

i do this with my current piggies :)

I've read that they should be eating alfalfa hay and i should avoid giving them fruit.. Is this right?

Intoducing all veg slowly is important, asking the rescue what they already feed will let you know what they are used too.

Alfalfa hay... its debatable when to stop feeding them this, hopefully more experienced people will come and comment :)

thanks Connie :)

I'll ask the rescue what they've been feeding them when i collect them on Sunday.. My other two turn their noses up at alfalfa hay so it'll be a special trip if they do need it.

What would you advise to start them on with veg? or does that depend on what they are already eating?

its not so much what you start them with, its introducing them one at a time, so on ethe first day dont give them a massive bowl of all different kinds. :) However i would start with the basics (ie lettuce) personally, rather than something like banana that they can only have as a treat anyway. :)

Anything theyre already eating should be fine to feed as you normally would. :)

Alfalfa is very high in calcuim, therefore it is only usually fed as a treat, or to pregnant/nursing mums and young pups. :) the local pet shop to me do it in nice small bags. Hoepfully someone will answer the alfalfa question soon! :)
