Hello all!
For the past 2-3 months, one of my girls has been struggling with some health problems that we've been back and forth from the vet for. She had a cyst on her back that we had to take care of, then some urinary issues, but now she's running into other issues that my vet thinks ovarian cysts might be the cause of.

She's going in for an ultrasound Monday in which we'll be discussing if surgery is ideal for her or not, but I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with spaying older pigs? My vet is a little worried that she wouldn't be able to handle a surgery like that.

She is about 4 and a half to 5 years old.

My Betsy had an emergency spay when she was four and a half and sailed through the operation.

My girl Melody turns 6 years old next month and was spayed last Tuesday, we thought she had ovarian cysts but it turned out to be cancer, she had a tumour in her uterus and an unexpected huge tumour attached to her stomach, pancreas and spleen.

She had this removed as well as a spay at the same time, was under GA for 2 hours, was very thin at the time of surgery, having cancer and being nearly 6, all odds were against her, but she came through too! It has been a slightly longer recovery, but given everything she had going on, it all went smoothly.

I've had 3 others aged 3-4 years be spayed too due to classic ovarian cysts and they did well. I wish you and your piggie all the best ❤

Good luck with the ultrasound. I hope the vet can get to the bottom of her problems.
