I'm a bit worried about 1 of my boars...

First I noticed him scratching himself a bit and biting at his skin, I thought this might be normal as it seemed quite occasional.

Recently though I've noticed abrasion the skin, most probably from scratching , and also some hair loss (probably from scratching although never seen him targetting that spot).

The other boar in the same cage is fine.....

I clean out the cage once a week and use a special small animal disinfectant spray to disinfect the cage..

I wonder if it could be the spray? Does it look like it might be midges? Or perhaps fleas bought in with the cheap hay we get from asda.

I'm low on money so obviously would rather not have to take him to the vet unless necessary... he doesn't seem in a lot of pain but may is likely quite unpleasant for him.

Thank you !

Tom

He does need to see a vet to get that diagnosed it could be fungal I would imagine by the looks of it and will only get worse without the correct diagnosis and treatment.

Please get him to see a vet ASAP, they will get him sorted out.

I agree, it does sound like it could be fungal and so he needs to see a vet for a proper diagnosis. The other possibility is mange mites or a combination mites/fungal issue. Is he an abby? if so it looks like he is losing hair from within his rosettes and if the hair looks broken half way down the shaft that would make me think mites at least.

Welcome to the forum by the way Tom

Thanks for the advice everyone! I have booked an appointment for tomorrow eve. it's actually only £26 for the consultation (not as bad as I'd thought.)
I hope it's not too painful whatever it is.... I'll let you know what they say.

Thanks again
Tom

ps I honestly don't officially know if he's an Abyssinian but the fact he has those tufts of hair makes me think he might be.

I think you are wise taking you GP to the vet. I am taking mine tomorrow to a vet who is on the Guinea Pig recommended Vet Locator show on the top of the page. I would rather get my GP checked over by a specialist vet who can recommend correct treatment. If I bought stuff from a pet shop it can be costly and possibly not even solve the issue. Good luck with your GPs treatment.

I'm glad you've got a vet appointment. I would wonder if it is fungal too- one of mine gets fungal infections and will bite at the areas that itch and loses fur. I can tell when it's flaring up just by how often she chews at her legs even before any noticeable hair loss or skin redness. Hope he feels better soon!

Ok so the vet couldn't find any skin fragments (apparently like dandruff) and couldn't see any flees or evidence of (apart from the obvious hair loss), so didn't know exactly what it was...

We concluded that it's probably either some kind of mite we couldn't see or otherwise it's just a bad reaction to something...?

Anyhow he injected him and gave a couple of doses of some anti parasitic ointment to put on his back, which I have to repeat in 2 weeks time.. That should take care of any parasites/mites if there are any... So fingers crossed he will just get back to normal now :) He does seem happy enough now so thats something.
