I can't quite believe I am saying this but, after only a week as part of our family, beautiful, gentle Dilys has gone to the bridge. :(

In Stamford, helpless 2 hours from home, I received a call from my OH at 6am yesterday to say he'd woken to find her laid on her side, poorly and weak and he was rushing her to the vets. We were both in shock. She had shown absolutely no signs of illness and only late the night before her and Basil had been chasing each other and then cuddling up sharing cucumber.

Our vet by all accounts tried all different things but her heart was weak and failing and he eventually said the best thing to do was to let her go without pain or distress.

We both feel so awful. She had only been with us a week. This precious little thing entrusted in our care. :(

Please everyone send hugs to Joanne at Milhaven today who had cared for her for so long and his as shocked and devastated as we are. Also spare a thought for a very bewildered Basil who is trying to come to terms with the loss of the love of his life while getting more cuddles than ever from us.

She obviously needed to see Basil settled and happy in his forever home before she left him.

I'm sorry, guinea pigs are so good at hiding an illness until its usually too late. Rip xx
 
I can't think about beautiful Dilys without tears in my eyes at the moment, she was a very special piggy who was just too young to go at three and a half. I remember this little, pregnant scap arriving at the rescue, already nursing a litter of 3 and ever lovely Basil trying to help. She was so strong and brave and the best mum to those babies. Basil was lost without her when he was neutered, even though they were side by side bars touching. They spent all day squashed against the bars next to each other. I didn't have the heart to seperate them.

RIP lovely Dilys, this world is a much sadder place without you, I miss you so much but I'm so glad that you found the perfect home near the end. Dont worry about Basil sweetheart, he is in the best hands.

My heart goes out to you Katie, I'm sending lots of hugs. Please give Basil a gentle cuddle from me and tell him I'm thinking of him too. I'm shocked and devastated that you had such a short time with your new piggies. I'm thinking of you all at this awful time x>>
 
I'm so sorry for your loss but you did everything you could for her and she died knowing she was loved very much.

RIP Dilys.
 
I'm so sorry to see this post Dily's was a beautiful girl and cannot imagine your upset.

You and your husband did all you could and when the time is right I am sure Joanne will help find a new friend for Basil.

Guinea's Pig's do hide illness so well but sometimes it can be sudden with no warning - it's sad that she has left and she will be sadly missed but please remember you did all that you could.

I am so sorry; I know how heartbreaking it is to find a seemingly healthy, young piggy all of a sudden dying from sudden heart failure - and there is nothing you can do... It really whacks you!

RIP Dilys - so sad that you couldn't stay longer

Oh no... what an awful thing to happen! I'm so sorry you didn't get longer with your lovely new girl and my heart goes out to you, Joanne and of course the lovely Basil.

Rest in peace sweetie; you didn't get long with your new mum but you definitely made your impression. Sleep well. x
