Ebonys developed a lump under her chin on her neck (slightly to one side). I just noticed it today when I was stroking her and its really quite big. Not sure how long its been there but she loves getting her neck tickled so I think I would've noticed it before if it had been there for long.

Anyone had similar lumps ? Any ideas what it is and what the vet may advise ?

I will make an appointment for her at the vets on Monday. Why do these things always happen at the weekend.... she seems fine apart from the lump and is eating etc though is perhaps a little clingier than usual.

YES!

Remember ages ago I was telling you about Pebbles lump. It appeared overnight too I think as Pebbles also loved getting under her chin tickled. It was about the sizy of a marble, very noticable.

I took Pebbles to the vet, got told it was her lymph nobe that was swollen. They gave me a weeks worth of Baytril which I think did nothing the lump didn't change. I then decided just to leave it as she was not affected by it in anyway.

3 weeks or maybe less than that it was gone, have no idea what it was!

Wow....yes, I remember Pebbles lump now ...... Ebony's is about marble size too - I was tickling her yesterday and didn't notice it at all ...maybe its similar then .....

I think I should still take her along for a check on Monday but not rush into anything too major .....

Thanks very much for the reply - it has eased my worry a lot.....

Well I just thought I would update this thread to let you know how Ebony got on at the vets and in case anyone has any similar lumps in future.

The lump today was even bigger - like a gob stocker size. The vet (who was great with her and is a piggy fan himself) aspirated it and a load of puss came out it. He said it was definately an abcess - he squeezed a lot more puss out and I've been given Baytril to give her (quarter tablet a day for a week).

He also checked her teeth but thought they looked okay. I've also to make sure she gets plenty of veg, vitamin C rich food and watch her weight.

So fingers crossed...... now I just need to work out how to best give her these tablets....mmmh.... crushed in something I guess rolleyes

Oh bless her, so pleased the lump isn't to serious.
Fingers crossed it all heals quickly x

Oh the Joys! I'm sure it will be fun for you! Get well soon Ebony, that sounds disgusting :))

Pebbles lump never got any bigger, once it appeared it stayed that size till it disappeared!x

I was going to say abscess.... keep an eye on it, as it may fill back up. Hopefully they left the incision open so you can express anything else that may come up. Hope she is back to normal soon!

If you have to feed a quarter of a tablet - then crush it in either 2.0ml of water and feed 0.5ml per dose....or crush in 1.0nl of water and feed 0.25ml per dose......keep the remaining crushed solution in the fridge

What is the dose on the tablet box please...it's unusual for baytril to be given in tablet form as there is a ready-made solution available. Lets' make sure the right srength does is being given.....

Lump in the neck area that is an abcess is normally indicative of lymphadenitis (LA). A variety of bacteria can cause this and baytril SHOULD be able to knock them out....but you might need to opt for another anitbioitic if baytril does;t work. Keep a close eye and if there is no improvement after 4 days then come back here. Next option is either septrin (orally) or long acting tetracycline by injection.

I have had 3 piggies with LA - two managed just fine on baytril - one had to have serious surgery and tetracycline but ultimately made a full recovery......

Good luck - you have acted quickly and so has your vet....

Hi,
Thanks for your reply and the information. I tried crushed tablet on her wet lettuce this morning but not sure she got all of it as she seemed to taste it and go off the lettuce in favour of biting my top rolleyes but she must've got some at least. I will try as you suggest for the next time thanks.
The tablets are 15mg - does this sound okay to you ? The vet did say not to worry if I gave slightly over the quarter.
