Hi, I am worried about my male guinea pig Lunar, who has a large lump on his shoulder. He's a bit of a grumpy thing but doesn't seem to mind me touching it too much. Could it be a cyst? I have booked him into the vet on Thursday morning. Any ideas?
They are very prone to cysts, so it could be. Most small furries are also very prone to tumours, but that doesn't mean it is one. Wait and see what your vet thinks. Hope he's ok x
It is impossible to give a safe diagnosis over the internet; lumps can be many things from abscesses to various cysts and at worst a tumour. Any lump needs to be seen by a vet. Good that you have him already booked in at the vets.
Thank you both. I will let you know what happens. Hope my vet is cavy savvy.
I know I've read that castration doesn't necessarily change boars behaviour but he is mounting the other smaller boar and has a damaged foot, should I go down that route too?
Fingers crossed it goes ok at the vets Neutering won't stop him humping sadly, mounting is typical boar behaviour, I have all boars and not a days goes by they don't mount one another
The lump started weeping yesterday morning just before I was due to take him to the vet, so I guessed it was an abscess. I was right so Lunar stayed yesterday at the vets and had it removed. He spent a comfortable night warm in/ on a fleecy cozy and on his own. He has eaten and according to my daughter at 3am!
I introduced him to back in with the others this morning and he was none too pleased, back to making his brrrring noises! So on the road to recovery.
I read that abscesses can be worse than cysts, why so? Infection etc. ?
Glad that Lunar has got well through his operation.
Abscesses can be very stubborn and make a comeback if you don't keep them open until they have fully drained and healed up. Yours has been removed so there hopefully won't be any problems. http://www.guinealynx.info/abscess.html
Please see your vet asap if you notice a swelling; it could be the sign of an infection that has gone into the body.
