After reading last night the thread about guinea pig toys, I agreed that mental stimulation was the thing. I have moved him temporarily into an animal carrier that has room for him to move around in, given him a hidey box and his food and water, but all he had to do was sit there. Based on what I read about the toys, I thought of something simple but multipurpose. The weather has cooled down a bit, so I wanted to give him a bed to curl up in if he wants. I also wanted to give him something to investigate if he wants. AHA! I had an idea!
I took a soft cloth baseball cap and stuffed it with crumpled paper towel balls. The hat has no buttons or other fixtures that would hurt him. He can use the bill of the cap as a ramp, which he has done, and he has sniffed all over the hat, climbed into it and out, tasted it in various places, and talked to it. Because of the bowl shape, it does tip as he climbs in, and this makes him curious.
He is back in his hidey box right now not doing anything, but he did have a little bit of activity this morning because of the hat, so I'm not too worried. I will keep checking on him frequently during the day, however, to make sure that he is just resting and maybe overwhelmed by all of the changes and that he is not sick. I haven't found a vet around here yet that treats rodents, but there are two veterinary schools within 150 miles so that might be a solution.
