My poor Lilypig, had another of many attempts to clip his nails today. He is so hard to do, really hates it and won't stay still, keeps biting the other half who is holding him.
Anyway i eventually plucked up the courage and had a go. Last time i made one nail bleed a tiny bit, and he screamed. Both my boys have dark nails, and they are starting to curl where I am failing to cut them properly. I cut the front claws ok, then tried one of the back ones. He moved and I cut way too high. it bled loads and he really squealed, bless him. I dipped the claw in bicarb of soda, as I think I read on here that was a good thing to do? I think it has stopped now, I held him on a towel for a bit, then put him back oin his run as he looked stressed.
Will he be ok? so worried I have damaged his claw permanently.
I'm even more scared to try again next time. I Think I will take them both to the vets, to get them to clip them properly. Worried that the vet will go too high and hurt them too though!

Aw try not to worry, so long as its stopped it should be ok, but keep an eye n him, you need to be careful of the nerve endings. Vets do it fairly cheaply, failing that a dog groomer would probably be even cheaper, i always take mine to the vet.

I do mine myself but only because their nails are either clear or brown, all the quick can be seen using my phones LED flash underneath and with my OH help its over in 5 minutes

But our dog has jet black, cant even see with a powerful torch nails so we take her to the vet. She has joint problems so cant walk enough to keep her nails from getting too long

oh no... dont worrie yourself... its a very superficial injurie and piggies have a tendency to over react...!...:))
just check it over the next few days to make sure there no infection...

if you dont want to take them to the vets... alot of rescues offer nail clipping for a small donation... so if youve got one local might be worth while seeing if they do it...
x

Could you ask someone to hold him for you whilst you do it? When i do my mums piggy for her she holds him upright with his back to her and i have better control of his feet for when he pulls away.

Also, could you try just taking the teeny weeny little ends of but more often, then he may get more used to it and you wont risk taking too much?

I know when i cut nails i got hot when i clip each one!

:x

I did that to my Phoebe too, it didn't stop bleeding for a good 15 mins. Had just got into the car to the vets when it eventually stopped. It knocked my confidence alot.
I find it far easier to do it on my own, my Mum tends to panic which then panics me!
Just try to keep calm, don't get flustered as they sense that I think.

yes I'm always worried that i'll do the same to i have my mum to help me cut them! but I'm going to learn how to do it myself as i can't ask mum all time! , i think its a case of me having to be more clam when i do it! but she pulls her feet away! from me!

I find by getting your piggy out and having a long cuddle first calms them before doing their nails. A little treat after never fails either although they do sulk for a bit and give me the evil eyes :))
Dab a bit of cornflour on if you nick the quick or have a styptic pen handy.
Like doglovinpiggylover, I tend to just trim the ends off little and often :(|)

I HATE doing it, in fact I now flatly refuse to and my husband has to do it!

The last time I did it I clipped one of my little girl's nails (its black) too low, it bled like mad. Stopped though after a few minutes and some salt water.

However, after doing the others I returned and (bearing in mind she is a light grey silver agouti) I found her looking like dracula, she had blood all over her white lips, all down her front...OMG! She had licked her paw and made it bleed even more! I held her for about 15 minutes and wrapped some kitchen roll around it. We soaked two kitchen tissues in blood before it stopped. She was fine and I think she found the whole thing entertaining! However I was panicking and a nervous wreck! Never, ever again! :{

Don't worry these things happen and it's not your fault.

I take my four girls to the vets to have their nails clipped as one in particular cries blue murder! Thankfully my vet doesn't charge me to clipped all four.

I have been attempting to cut them myself for over a week now but have so far only cut two nails out of four pigs mallethead She moved and put me off so I haven't tried again since :(

My Peter screams everytime I clip a nail whether I'm anywhere near the quick or not rolleyes but then he's a complete drama queen, if it weren't for him having clear nails I would not be comfortable clipping them myself at all.

I go all red from holding my breath while I do it! McMac enjoys wriggling around while I do it so it is even worse. but I try to be as slow and gentle as I can. As long as it has clogged up and stopped bleeding he should be ok. Probably just a little sensitive like if we cut our nails too short

Poor you! I'm too scared to do it myself and always go to the vet. Do you use 'guinea-pig' nail scissors or will human ones do the job?

As a dog groomer I also offer small pet services, I charge £5 juwt for piggy nails most groomers would do similar thing if you asked x

Human clippers are easier than guinea pig nail scissors

Would you suggest using human clippers then? I lost my guinea pig clippers somewhere -searched everywhere for them- and my guinea pigs nails are getting a bit long. I was told not to use human ones.

i use human nail clippers, small ones for the fronts and some backs and large ones for the big thick nails!

Thanks for the reassurances everyone. I've kept an eye, and he seems happy enough now. I use guinea pig clippers rather than human ones. I started off using human ones, but found they seemed to crush their nails, even using large ones? Have to say though the guinea pig ones seem hard to use, really difficult to get their nails into the hole, and if they wriggle, you cut the wrong place.
My neighbour is a dog groomer, I'll ask if she would do them. I also have had a lady in when I've been away who runs a pet sitting/animal grooming business, so i bet she could do that sort of thing.
I'm really too scared to touch them now!

I accidently did that to peanut recently, and I washed it off with water and after fifteen minutes of pressing her nail into a towel it stopped bleeding. I think this is a very common thing to accidently do to pets, so don't feel too bad. :)

Wow I am so pleased I am not the only one! I also hold my breath and go bright red and start getting very hot! Another reason why i won't do it any more! Nice to know I am not alone!

Oh it makes you feel dreadful doesn't it! I've caught my new girl Penny's nail before Christmas, I'd only had her a couple of weeks, I only took a tiny bit off and it bled so much! She was as good as gold. I think I've read that flour is mean to stop the bleeding.
Damn those black nails!
