Has anyone else had this trouble?

There's a massive magpie trying to get at my Guinea pigs that were out on the grass in their run. I've had to bring them in.

My pigs arnt little either, they weigh in at 1.5kg !

Its was really scary. The first time I thought I was seeing things, so I chased it off. They I saw it come back fo a second go :{

unfortunately this is not an unusual event! magpies will remove eyes from baby lambs.... you will need to try and make the mesh on you run smaller or only have them out when you are out with them.

Glad you rescued your guinea pigs and that they have come to no harm!

Well my heart was pounding. I just saw the magpie pecking (and dancing around) at the piggies tunnel and my boy Pepper running through it before I ran outside :o

Got to keep an eye on the rabbits too as they do have free range and normaly I leave their playhouse door open while I'm making tea or cleaning them out :...

Yes, you must keep a careful eye on piggies as they are vulnerable to bird :magpies and also buzzards.

A long time ago my cousin was playing with a small kitten outside in a rural area. A buzzard swooped down and scooped the kitten up from his feet and flew off with it.

You can't be too careful!

A magpie was trying to get my cat the other day in the garden.. she climbed up a tree and strated to shout at it which was cute as I didnt think the magpie would actually get her.. then it seemed to call for more and there were 4 in my garden! Poor emleigh didnt know if she should try and catch them or hide!

And there was me just glad there was more than 1.. with it being 1 for sorrow (2 for joy, 3 for girl, 4 for boy, etc)

will keep an extra eye on them now x

There was a bird watching my piggie run and although I am here I put something on top too keep them extra safe! You can never be to careful!

The magpie couldnt get in as it's got a top on the run but it could peck through the bars and was definatley trying to locate and peck the piggies. There was no food in the run so he wasnt trying to get that, there was just the piggies tunnels and hideys and hay box.
I'm now looking for a big run for them with very small mesh holes so the magpie cant easily get their beaks in.

Could you not just get mesh (small holes) and wrapped it round your current run if that makes sense?

That's a good idea, I will have to look into that.

In the mean time, like today, they had to wait till I got home from the shops before they went outside, then we all was on Guinea pig duty, me, the husband my kids and my dog, didnt see one magpie all afternoon :)

You can get a wire run in sections designed for hamsters, much narrower wire spacing on it. Perhaps this could be put alongside the piggy one to keep the magpies beaks out.
