maisie has a wet back end and i don't know why. she is long haired at the back. think she has sheltie in her. anyway, her fur is white and then it has long black hair over that, looks like she is wearing a skirt. x)

anyway, the white fur is stained yellow and when i just picked her up her bum was wet.

i clean the cage everyday so i don't know why. she does spend alot of time in the same place and goes toilet their aswell so maybe she is just sitting in it? or trailing her 'skirt' through it? i don't really know.

she is fine in herself. she is eating/drinking/toiletting ok, although she does drink alot of water so i guess she wees alot aswell.

she doesn't squeel or anything when she wees and she's happy in herself.

i was thinking of trimming the hair around her bum and maybe that would help?

one of my bunnies has wee stains around his bum area on his white fur aswell, and he doesn't have any problems, he just stains easily. he has green stains from the grass aswell.

i'm worried obv though because her bum shouldn't feel wet obv. any help or advice would be great. thanks.

forgot to say - the staining isn't round where she wees from, it's more on her back end, like her rump, just above where a tail would be. that make sense?

this points towards maybe her sitting in her wee, or trailing her bum through it because her hair is long. what do you think?

My Carmeline, although shorthaired, gets a stained bottom because she can't reach around particularly well. She is stiff around the shoulders and always has been. So I give her a flannel wash every now and then, which she rather enjoys, to keep her clean.

It could be that the long hair is making it hard for your piggie to clean themselves, or she could simply be stiff shouldered like Carmeline and find it hard to reach that bit. On Carmeline she gets mucky around near the grease gland, top of the thigh on the inside, the parts that you would sit on in a human!

I haven't experienced a long haired piggie, but I know it's a good idea to keep them clean anyhow. Perhaps trimming and then seeing if she can clean herself once trimmed? Just a suggestion.

thanks.

i don't think she has anything wrong because she wasn't like this when she arrived here from the rescue. she hasn't been here long so i am worried about stressing her so a quick clean with a flannel would be better than a bath straight away.

do you just use water on the flannel and then let her dry somewhere warm? or can you use a tiny bit of shampoo and then wipe it off? i'm not sure it would rinse very well that way but maybe if i use a very tiny amound of shamlpp, dampen the hair and then trim, rinse and leave her to dry and see if she is better like that?

i have shampoo in at the moment, the manuka and neem one from gorgeous guineas, and then the just for boars aswell.

the only other thing i have is those petsafe rabbit and small animal hygiene wipes. does anyone use those? it doesn't say what is in them though and i'm not sure about using them.

maisie is more stained like above the scent gland, the top of the rump area! it doesn't spread from her bun to there, it's just there, and clear underneath? it looks like she must lie on that bit maybe?

i just thought that maybe she did have it before and i didn't notice, because her black skirt used to cover all her bum, but then yesterday i noticed it had parted a bit (like pleats!) and that underneath was white hair!

keep thinking of other things! she also drinks alot, like half a 320ml bottle in 24 hours. is that normal? chesney is there too but he doesn't drink that much, not as much as her. so she probably has less than half if chesney drinks some aswell, but still, it seems alot.

For the flannel bath I use a warm damp flannel first, then one which has been dipped in a very weak solution of shampoo (just a bit in a bowl of water) and then a third with just water on. They all have to be warm! This is important as then Carmeline rather enjoys the experience and just settles along my forearm chuckling away like mad. My hand is supporting her tummy with her back legs hanging just off my fingers. I think she thinks I'm Mummy! Then a rub with a towel to dry a little but no more than this. To be honest, she doesn't get more than a bit damp.

It's not perfect, she isn't totally clean afterwards, but it is the least upsetting and least intrusive bathing method I can achieve so I can repeat it as necessary.

Hope this helps,

just trimmed maisies bum bum. she has long black hair and some long white hair underneath that aswell so i trimmed and now there is hardly any staining as it was part of the long hair, so looks like she had been trailing it through the wee, or sat her 'skirt' in her wee! rolleyes

she was such a good girl. she just sat there whilst i carefully trimmed and then after she had a nice relaxing brush which she loves, and she lay down in her blanket on my knee and had a little sleep. x)

chesney sits next to us on the settee in his blanket aswell and they take turns on my knee for cuddles. x) x) x)

love them so much, they're too cute!

anyway, so maisie is nice and trimmed and dry now. she did have a wee on my knee though! rolleyes

they're back in their nicely cleaned cage and having some veg for being so good. :)

just posted at the same time!

thanks for your help, i'll try that with her if she gets a mucky bum again. :)

I just posted about the flannel bath at the same time - but you won't be needing that info now! Nice to hear it's working out.
