she hasn't long finished her eyedrops and now we were back at the vets today. during the drops, she lost more weight. i thought it was just because of that but then this morning she had fishy smelling urine with blood spots, and she has lost another 95g. she's now her lowest ever weight.

to cut a long story short - she has most probably got something wrong with her kidneys.he vet strongly suspects this.she also has a uti again so is on treatment for that, and she is on metacam aswell for that and because she has arthritis in both back legs now.

she's back at the vets next week for bloods. they will run a full blood profile to check mainly her kidneys, but other organs aswell.

she's very very skinny now. but the vet said her gut sounds were fantastic and her poops fantastic aswell. she's still eating as normal and is fairly bright. resting quite alot but being amazing.

i also have to give her extra vitamin c.

i'm so gutted though. what if it is her kidneys? :(:(:(

Oh no I am sorry :( Are you syringe feeding her to boost her weight at all? How old is she?

no, the vet didn't mention syringe feeding as maisie is eating completely normally and i don't know if syringe feeding aswell would be too much on her tum? she's about six and a bit.

I am so sorry. Maisie is an amazing piggy who has come through a lot.

If you are looking at kidney failure, there really isn't much you can do other than love her why she is here and think about making that decision if the time comes but please don't worry about that just yet as it could be something else.

Thinking of you and Maisie xx

I agree with Claire. I would see if she will take some syringe food, their guts can slow down pretty quick especially if they have any pain & if she is happy to take some I would try a small amount a couple of times a day, especially as she eating normally it is easier to get her used to some feeds before having a GA , as you will need to syringe feed her afterwards. She could also do with some gut stims after her op, Emeprid & Zantac for a couple of days to keep her guts moving :)

thanks. i'm trying not to think too far ahead. if i do, i will completely lose the plot and be of no use to her. one step at a time. she should feel much better once the metacam has kicked in, and within a couple of days hopefully for the antibiotic to start helping aswell. she's back on marbocyl.

she will only be having a very light sedation next week whilst they take the blood sample, so hopefully she will cope ok with that. she did last time so i hope she will do again.

then we will just have to wait for the blood profile results. and i think they will be doing xrays again and another urine sample directly from her bladder aswell.

x

it's been such a stressful day as my vet wasn't there, and neither was our backup, so we had to see the new vet there, which made me anxious. he seems nice though.

Hopefully it will all be ok, will keep everything crossed for her. I would definitely give her some syringe feeds for the next week or so though, it will keep her strength up & hopefully may help with her weight a little. My Poppy lived to 7 & she did lose a little weight, mostly off her back which started to feel more bony. It's an amazing age though :)

thank you. i will order her some recovery food and offer her some pellet mash until it gets here. my poor maisie needs a break. it has been one thing after another for her lately. thank you for the support. i really do need it. x

thanks for the vibes.

i really think she may have hurt herself. she's bunny hopping quite alot. the thing is - we saw aidan about a week ago/9days and he felt her for anymore stiffness as he always does and there wasn't any. so it doesn't seem likely to me that she would get arthritis in her other leg in this space of time, and for it to be worse than the arthritis in her right leg that she has had for ages. :(

i know it could also be linked to vitamin c though and her not being able to get what she needs from her food.

she had her meds when we got back from the vets, and she's had her tea and just now had some pellet mash with her normal pellets, which she loved.

there are still blood spots in her urine, and every so often that fishy smell is back. it is so strong.

she's quite tired and resting alot as she walks around but is eating as normal and pooping normally. also drinking normally aswell. she's definitely tired but she's also staying quite bright within herself aswell.

i found some recovery food aswell so i will offer her some of that aswell.

thanks again for the support x

Could she have had a calcium crash? could you discuss a short course of Osteocare with your vet?

Could she have had a calcium crash? could you discuss a short course of Osteocare with your vet?

i really don't know to be honest. to me, it seems like she is stiff everywhere. i don't think it's arthritis causing it. my feeling is that she is missing something or can't get what she needs from her diet.

i'm a bit out of my depth. i don't know much about all this, and i'm having to trust a vet who is exotics, but who i don't know. :(

i can certainly mention the oesteocare. would you still be thinking xrays, urine sample, and bloods aswell? i'm going to get another consult for before we leave them there for the day so i can discuss everything again.

x

Yes I would definitely still ask for that, it will help with any diagnosis and she could have Osteocare in the meantime.

Sorry i can be of no help or offer any advice, but here's sending you a bucket load of healing vibes for maisie & a hug for you too.

Get well soon Maisie. from the girls & I. xx

i feel personally that she has sludge and stones. just because we were told that this could potentially happen, and because of how she is. the weight loss is alot so i know why the vet mentioned her kidneys, but when ches had sludge, the amount of blood was awful, and he lost 198g in total initially, so i know how much that can affect weight. she doesn't have anywhere near the amount of blood compared to what ches had, but around her vagina is 'gritty' so i think sludge is a strong possibility. whether her kidneys have been affected, i don't know, we will have to wait and see.

i just hope she doesn't get this chronic bladder thing that alot of piggies do get.

she's being a good girl. she's eating normally still and we think her movement has improved from what it was. she wants to be with us alot for comfort and spent hours on the settee with me yesterday.

i managed to get the vitamin c tablet dose so she started that last night aswell. (couldn't remember the dose so needed to double check)

she's soldiering on bless her, but she's obviously in discomfort and her back end, and back legs are very tense and more apart than they should be aswell. she's not squeaking in pain this time but last time she had cystitis, she would hunch up as she urinated, but this time, it looks to me like she is permanently hunched and can't relax back down .i don't think it's arthritis in her left leg to be honest. she also squints when weeing aswell.

i'm going to weigh her again in a bit when she has her meds so i hope she's stayed stable and not lost anymore. she's only 800g (772g on the vets scales) now. very very low for her.

anymore thoughts or advice, please let me know. x

she's just been sat with me on the settee for the last hour or so. had her metacam, been weighed, and had her vitamin c, some hay and cuddles. she's 795g today so about the same. tired but doing ok and enjoying her food as always. x

I have no advice sorry, just want to send Maisie lots of love and healing vibes x

We are also going through it with our little girl Fluffy who is also 6, Fluffy is having breathing problems and is currently at the emergency vets on a nebuliser. Fluffy used to suffer with UTIs with that horrible fishy odour. A course of antibiotics and dandelions sorted it. I'm hoping Maisie gets well soon its horrible when little old piggies are so poorly. Sending best wishes.

You are doing a wonderful job of caring for Maisie. I hope they can find out what is wrong and get her well.

I hope Maisie will get better very soon! I'm having similar issues with my 4 year old girl - she has had several rounds of antibiotics for a UTI and nothing has improved - still squeaking, groaning, chattering her teeth and squinting when weeing and pooing. She has had an xray and no stones were shown, but I'm not convinced so she is due another some time this month (hopefully in the next week or 2, we have another poorly girl so it's difficult).

Vibes for Maisie xx

Have you looked at Peter Gurneys pages on cystitis in guinea pigs, he advocated a barley water concoction . We tried it last time Fluffy had a UTI and it didn't do any harm. We also gave her herbs and plants that act as natural diuretics to encourage weeing to help flush bacteria out, dandelion being the obvious one but there are others. Poorly piggies are such a worry. Get well soon.

can maisie have more vibes please. she's at the vets now for her tests, but the initial urine sample has come back as very likely that she has kidney problems.

there is lots of protein and it is very watery, suggesting that her kidneys are struggling.
